700 - Aphilie
Aphily
Kurt Mahr

Seventy years have gone by since the Earth has stabilized its orbit around Medallion. However, the sun emits a radiation that is causing a mutation on the Terrans. Fifty percent of the population is now touched by what is called the Aphily, a disease that causes a total loss of feelings. Terrans are losing the ability to feel love, hatred or emotions. Only the owners of a cell-activator seems to be immune against the Aphily. The scientists predict that within ten years, 99% of the population will be touched.

A new order is emerging on the Earth, led by the Aphilians, who want to take the Humans into a new era where no feelings will be needed. The Terrans still untouched by the Aphily form a resistance movement and a civil war erupts on the Earth. The resistants are using the Book of Love as a symbol of their fight, a book which seems to cause the reader to have feelings again. A more radical group of Aphilians starts commiting terrorist acts. They call themselves the Servants of the Reason and they are led by the mysterious Brother One.

Meanwhile, the Terrans have been using these seven decades to build a new kind of spaceship. Baptized the Sol, this new spaceship is made of two Universe Class cruisers, each one 2500 meters big, connected by a 1500 meter long central rod. The Sol was built in an attempt to reach the Milky Way.

A resistant contacts Perry Rhodan and tells him that the Servants of the Reason have a spy very close to him. Rhodan asks for a reunion of the immortals and soon confronts the traitor : he is no one else than Reginald Bull, who reveals that he is Brother One. Although unaffected by the Aphily thanks to his cell-activator, Bull says that he sees the disease as a chance for the Humanity to enter a new era. He has all the immortals arrested and tried.

Perry Rhodan is forced to plead guilty or his whole group will be executed. Their sentence is to be banned from the Earth. They are to board the Sol and leave the Earth, never to come back again. Roi Danton, Rhodan's son, decides to stay on the Earth in order to help the Resistance. The crew of the Sol is made of all the Immortals, Icho Tolot, Lord Zwiebus and about a thousand people.

As the Sol is beginning its long trip toward the Milky Way, Rhodan tries to find some sleep in his room. Suddenly, a message appears before his eyes : "The prophecy begins its fulfillment. The seven seals must be broken. The first one will open the door to freedom and thoroughness". He soon understands that he has been the only one receiving this message, and he remembers the prophecy that the Immortal told him in the past...

Before leaving the Sol system, Rhodan has two tasks to accomplish. First, he must staff the Sol with enough people. A few years earlier, he had created a colony on Fort Carrent. As the Sol approaches the system, they notice that its sun, Malibu, is surrounded by an unknown energy field. The Sol breaks through it and lands on Fort Carrent. The colons and their children are boarded and the Sol punches its way back through the cloud. The scientists find out that the field was actually a living creature.

Then Rhodan wants to recover the eighteen robots that contain the sum of human knowledge, which he had created while trying to escape the Larens. The robots are still on the Moon, guarded by Nathan. Rhodan sends a Siganese commando there.

The Siganese find help on the Moon from non-Aphilians, who still trust that Rhodan will find a way to come back and free the Earth. Back on the Sol, Seneca receives the knowledge from the robots and the Sol leaves the Maelstrom of Stars for an unknown destination.

A recent initiative of the Aphilians over the past years has been to create the so-called Silent Houses. These are places were old people are sent and are never heard of again. Vester, a non-Aphilian, also called an Outsider, decides to investigate.

Using a disguise, he penetrates one of the Silent Houses and soon finds out that although elderlies are well treated, their reason for being there is simply so that their organs can be reused when they die, in a typical Aphilian initiative. Vester's real identity is discovered and he has to escape.

Thirty-eight years have gone by since Rhodan and his crew left the Earth on board the Sol. They arrive in the vicinity of a micro-nebula, which they call Balayndagar. Astronomic computations soon reveal that this will be their last stop before they finally reach the Milky Way. Rhodan decides to separate the spaceship : Cell-1 will land on Last Halt, a planet which they just discovered, and Cell-2 will remain in orbit.

As soon as they have set foot on the planet, It manifests itself with His usual laughter. He says he is surprised to see that Rhodan found Balayndagar, and that this galaxy will lead him to the first of the seven seals that Rhodan is supposed to break. Then It vanishes.

As Cell-1 is ready to leave the planet after filling up with food, water and other supplies from the planet, Seneca aborts the take-off and tells the crew that some unknown agent has penetrated the spaceship. Any attempt to take off will result in an explosion. A shuttle is sent in orbit to verify the theory and it explodes when it reaches 38,000 meters. The scientists soon realize that the unknown agent which has been brought onboard must be in the water and the air, making it impossible for anybody to leave the planet.

Rhodan contacts Senco, the officer in command on Cell-2, and asks him to abandon them and head for the Milky Way. The commandant complies reluctantly.

On Last Stop, a group of men discover a strange machine on the ground. When Romeo and Julia, the two robots under Seneca's control, arrive to analyze the strange device, they open fire and destroy it. Asked later about the incident, Seneca affirms that none of the two robots told it about the discovery and that they acted on their own.

711 - Die Unendlich-Denker
The Endless Thinkers

The Sol detects four SVE-spaceships flying by Last Stop. Intrigued by the presence of Larens in a galaxy so distant from the Milky Way, Icho Tolot and Pucky decide to follow them, using a spaceship that has not been put in contact with the atmosphere of the planet. The Larens land on a nearby planet, soon followed by Tolot and Pucky.

The mouse-beaver detects other beings on the planet but he can barely sense their thoughts. The creatures are tall and bear similarities with elephants, more notably their hands, which hardly have any fingers. It looks like these creatures cannot manipulate anything. Pucky assumes that the city they live in was built by the Larens, but wonders what they asked in exchange.

Tolot and Pucky explore one of their spaceships and contact one of them, called Eptrocur. The creatures are called Keloskians and they possess five brains. This particularity makes them extremely good mathematicians, allowing them to manipulate complex notions such as seven-dimension calculus. They also call themselves endless thinkers. Eptrocur tells the Terrans that they are a member of the Council of the Seven. They collaborate with the Larens by planning the expansion of the Council and supplying them with scientific brakthroughs. In return, the Larens manufacture what they need.

Suddenly, the alarms goes off and the spaceship is surrounded by a Paratron shield. A spokesperson of the Keloskians called Vahnvatt comes on board to talk with Pucky and Tolot. He tells them that a black hole is consuming Balayndagar, and that their only hope is to use the Sol to escape. Therefore, they decided to block the Terran spaceship on Last Stop. A Laren spaceship lands on the planet. The Larens have detected the Paratron field and have come to ask the Keloskians the reason why it's up. Worried that the Larens might learn about their plans about the Terrans and the Sol, the Thinkers are forced to turn the shield off, freeing Tolot and Pucky. The Larens take off, unaware of the Terrans' presence and of the double game the Keloskians are playing.

Pucky and Tolot return ton Last Stop and report to Rhodan. The new information is fed into Seneca, which reacts strangely to it : most of the data seems to get lost in the complex circuitry of the computer. Rhodan also sends several commandos to look for the devices that were found earlier on the planet, which are now almost guaranteed to have been installed by Keloskians to keep the Sol grounded.

As the Cinderella is flying away from the Sol with its forty-people crew, an old man materializes on board through the transmitter. He looks familiar to the commandant but no communication is possible. The man dies a few minutes later. The Cinderella arrives in the proximity of a black hole. with a double system in its vicinity. They land on one of its planets.

The crew discovers a two hundred meter high cylindric building. The construction is emitting radiations which seem to be connected with the black hole. Given the unusual nature of the black hole, the Terrans think that it is being artificially created and maintained by the structure. Shortly after a team has been sent to explore the building, called the Altrakulfth, seventeen Keloskian spaceships land around the Cinderella.

The Keloskians remotely take control of the Cinderella and send it in direction of the black hole. The Terran team on the planet destroys some installations inside the building, hoping to make the black hole disappear. Then the Keloskians contact them. They won't explain why they sacrificed the Cinderella inside the black hole but they tell the Terrans that the construction is actually a device that contains the black hole. If it stopped working, the black hole would immediately grow and engulf the whole system, and soon thereafter the small galaxy itself. The Keloskians eventually manage to stabilize the black hole.

As the Cinderella is about to plunge inside the black hole, the commandant decides to escape through the transmitter. When he materializes back, he has aged several decades and he has traveled back in time, when the Cinderella was arriving in the vicinity of the black hole.

The reason why Seneca has been behaving strangely is that it detected a kindred spirit on Last Stop. It is actively looking for it while preventing the Terrans from finding out about this strange entity. The Terrans are busy finding the devices, baptized "Gadgets", that they suspect are holding back the Sol on the planet. Several of them have been found already and are being analyzed by scientists on board the spaceship.

Galbraith Deighton notices that some of these devices are missing and he starts suspecting Seneca. The Terrans are also wondering if the Gadgets were not actually teleported on the surface after the Sol landed. One night, Pucky notices Keloskians walking in the forest and suddenly disappearing. He manages to activate the fictive transmitter they are using and finds himself teleported inside Seneca, where no other human had gone yet.

Several Keloskians are gathered there with the missing Gadgets. Seneca is apparently concluding a pact with them which will eventually lead to dispossessing the Terrans from the Sol. Pucky manages to convince Seneca that he is being manipulated and the Keloskians soon retreat with their mysterious Gadgets.

Reports of mysterious phenomena are brought to Rhodan's attention : as a crewmember of the Sol was about to drown in a nearby river, he was rescued at the last minute by a blue hand, and then teleported back on board. The story is confirmed by Pucky.

Joscan Hellmut, the cybernetician in charge of Romeo and Julia, is sent on a mission aboard the Brescia : he must seek out a Keloskian planet and try to conclude a pact with them. During the flight, he catches the glimpse of two children walking in the spaceship but nobody else sees them besides him. Romeo and Julia take control of the spaceship and lead it to an unknown planet in the Borghal system. The sun is a powerful 5D radiation emitter and the whole area is shaken by violent hyper vibrations.

The Brescia lands and is quickly surrounded by Keloskians. Romeo and Julia turn the Terran crew in to Kudan, the local commander of the Keloskians. The Terrans are unharmed but condemned to live the rest of their lives on the planet, Takrebotan. A Keloskian crew boards the spaceship and takes off, with Joscan and the two robots on board.

Joscan is contacted by the mysterious children he had spotted earlier and they take him to another dimension. The two kids explain themselves : they are named Ulturpf and Kjidder. They were born on the Sol and they possess the ability to travel between dimensions, probably because their parents used to work on radioactive material on the Sol. With their help, Joscan deactivates Romeo and Julia and regains control of the Brescia.

They find one and return to the Sol. Pucky quickly detects that something is wrong on the spaceship and they realize that they no longer control it.

The Brescia and a small fleet land on Last Stop and the loading of Keloskian devices begins. On the Sol, a group of Siganese awakens from their paralysis and heads toward the headquarters of Seneca. They threaten the giant computer to destroy its ego-sector, forcing the Keloskians to cancel their operation. The Brescian arrives near Takrebotan and Rhodan quickly spots an odd-looking spaceship surrounded by a Keloskian fleet. The construction is a seven hundred long cylinder and no doubt is possible : it is the Shetanmargt. Rhodan is more and more convinced that the Larens are unware of the existence of this machine. Rhodan, Pucky and Hellmut teleport on board the Shetanmargt.

Joscan Hellmut starts acting strangely when he discovers the inside of the Keloskian construction. Pucky and Rhodan get locked inside a force field and instead of helping them, Hellmut tells them that the Shetanmargt must not be destroyed, and that he will therefore help the Keloskians take it to a safe place with the Sol. Hellmut comes back on the Brescia and tells the crew that if they don't turn in Romeo and Julia to the Keloskian, Rhodan and Pucky will be killed. The Terrans are forced to comply. Shortly thereafter, the Shetanmargt departs for Last Stop.

On Last Stop, the Terrans detect SVE-spaceships headed toward the galaxy. They don't know yet what their goal is but they suspect that the Larens must have detected the emerging black hole in Balayndagar and are coming to investigate. The Shetanmargt lands on Last Stop and start disassembling itself. The pieces enter the Sol and merge with Seneca through a process that Rhodan and Pucky can't understand. Hellmut tells them that the Shetanmargt contains the total knowledge of the Keloskians, but that it is also an incredibly powerful computer capable of the most complex calculations based on 7-D arithmetics.

As the helpless Terrans outside the Sol watch the process, a small group has detected a construction in the nearby mountain and sets on to explore it. They discover an old observatory that has obviously not been used for several thousand years. The machines inside are still operational and they can easily spot the fleet of Laren spaceships as they enter Balayndagar.

717 - Das Ende von Balayndagar

Seneca explains to Rhodan the reasons behind its recent actions. Despite the appearances, the computer has never stopped working for the welfare of humanity. At the minute where it detected the existence of the Shetanmargt, Seneca had decided it would steal it from the Keloskians. The idea is to deprive the Keloskians from a crucial piece of equipment, but also on a longer term, to foil the future plans of the Council by feeding them bogus instructions.

Rhodan cannot hide his mistrust, arguing that there was no way Seneca might have detected the Keloskian device. Seneca explains that it received additional information from It when they arrived on Last Stop.

Rhodan is stunned by this revelation, and although he still doesn't trust completely Seneca, he is forced to rely on him for the time being. The influence of the black hole can now be felt on Last Stop, so they must take off right away. Thanks to the Shetanmargt, the Sol can now leave the planet. A group of fifty Keloskians is taken on board and the Sol takes off.

Before they leave Balayndagar definitely, Seneca tells Rhodan that they must pick up Dobrak. He is the best Keloskian mathematician, and without him, they will never be able to leave the small galaxy. Seneca insists that Icho Tolot and Alaska Saedelaere be sent on this mission. They both depart for Sorgh, the planet where the mathematician is supposed to be.

In the same time, an SVE-spaceship lands on Sorgh. The Larens are looking for Dobrak as well, but the Keloskian doesn't want to be taken away by the Larens and hides. The Laren commander asks one of his assistants to pretend to be Dobrak so that he can tell his superiors that his mission was successful. The SVE spaceship takes off with the pseudo-Dobrak on board.

Saedelaere and Tolot land on Sorgh and find Dobrak. When the Keloskian realizes that the Terrans own the Shetanmargt, he decides to follow them. He is also extremely intrigued by the Suit of Annihilation, which Alaska is wearing. They make it back to the Sol as the situation is becoming critical on the spaceship.

Dobak asks to be assisted by the twin brothers. Despite the efforts of the young mutants, the situation is helpless and the Sol can't break free from the growing attraction generated by the black hole. The Emraddin brothers dematerialize to some unknown destination and Dobrak realizes that there is only one alternative : they have to dive in the center of the black hole. Rhodan recognizes that they don't have any choice and the Sol is soon engulfed by the black hole.

The Sol emerges in an area of space called the Dakkar Zone. Soon, the whole crew wakes up and the scientists announce that the Dakkar Zone is connected through dimensional tunnels to eighteen other regions of space. It manifests itself to Rhodan and tells him that he is on his way to the second seal, but that he will have to make sacrifices to get there.

The Zone seems to be inhabited by only one race, and Rhodan decides to contact them. He hides the Sol in the outer rim of a sun and sends out Alaska, Pucky, Fellmer Lloyd and Icho Tolot. They are soon captured by the aliens and taken to one of their planets. They call themselves Zgmahkonians and they have fish-like features indicating aquatic origins.

The Zgmahkonians act in a hostile manner and they start questioning the Terrans. They block their thoughts as soon as Pucky tries to use his telepathic skills. However, the mouse-beaver had the time to grab some information, the most amazing one being that the Zgmahkonians seem to have a connection with the Council of the Seven.

Under the pressing interrogations, the Terrans decide to flee. They escape and hide in the outskirts of the main city. Pucky detects faint thoughts coming from a big monument in the middle of the city. The construction looks like a tomb and Pucky thinks that somebody of importance is being kept in an artificial sleep inside. He teleports there with Alaska while Lloyd and Tolot are captured by the Zgmahkonians.

The aliens want to know where the Sol is hidden and when they realize that conventional means are not working on the Terrans, they pretend that they are willing to negociate and allow Lloyd and Tolot to get back to their shuttle.

Meanwhile, Alaska and Pucky have been able to break into the tomb, using the strange powers of the Suit of Annihilation. Pucky finds engravings representing Larens on the wall, thus confirming his suspicion. More reading into the sleeper's thoughts reveals that there are eleven other sleepers, resting on different worlds in the Zone.

They finally discover the Zgmahkonian resting on a slab, surrounded by all sorts of instruments. Pucky decides to kidnap him. After a brief telepathic discussion with Lloyd, they teleport back on the shuttle and take the Zgmahkonians by surprise. Before the aliens realize what's happening, they escape through a hidden transmitter.

Back on the Sol, the sleeper wakes up. His name is Owl and he doesn't seem to be hostile toward the Terrans. Along with a fraction of the Zgmahkonian population, they decide to stay on the planet as it is finally engulfed by the black hole.

The planet emerges in an intermediate dimension, the Inter-Zone, which is connected through tunnels to eighteen other regions of space. All the spaceships who tried to escape Grojocko were destroyed by the black hole, and Olw is now in charge of the surviving Zgmahkonians. Before he can start organizing their survival, his team is attacked and paralyzed by a group of rebel Zgmahkonians led by Bassok, an officer worried by Olw's growing influence on the fate of the nation.

Olw is awakened by Bassok fifty years later. Grojocko has become a prosperous planet but it is not enough to satisfy Bassok's ambition. He now wants to expand his kingdom. He wants to use the tunnels to build a new stellar power, a Council. Since only the Specialists of the Night know how to maneuver through the tunnels, he needs them to explore the different regions of space the Inter-Zone is connected to and forge alliances to lay the foundations for his Council, by force if necessary. Olw refuses but Bassok threatens to kill the women on his team. Without them, none of the Specialists will be able to have kids since they can't breed with regular Zgmahkonians. Olw is forced to comply.

Olw leaves the Inter-Zone and on his arrival in one of the unknown galaxies the Zone is connected to, witnesses a fleet of spaceships dropping atomic bombs on a harmless world. He follows the aliens and lands on their planet. They call themselves Larens and their technology is no match for the Zgmahkonians. They reluctantly accept to be the first member of the Council.

Olw returns to Grojocko to report to Bassos. He realizes that other Specialists, including the women, were sent on similar missions. One of them has made contact with a race of jellyfish-like creatures called Hyptons. They have the power to hypnotize and subjugate people to accomplish their will.

When Olw returns on the Laren world, he is greeted by a powerful Laren fleet that tries to destroy them. He fights back and the Larens are severely defeated. They capitulate unconditionally and Olw establishes the first beachhead for the Council on their world. He comes back to Grojocko and Bassok tells him he intends to put the Specialists of the Night into an artificial sleep and awaken them whenever he needs them. Olw is forced to accept his fate, along with his companions.

The Millennium Sleepers

Olw and his companions are awakened again 50,000 years later. The Zgmahkonians are ruled by two dictators, Arautymen and Mheyrakz. Once again, they need help from the Specialists of the Night : the Larens have developed robots with which they intend to break free from the influence of the Council. Arautymen want the Specialists to search for a new race in order to pacify the Larens again.

As Olw and the Specialists decide to refuse to help the dictators this time, Qwogg, one of them, accepts and leaves the Inter-Zone on an exploration mission. He eventually discovers the Greikos, who have the ability to pacify people with an emission from their brain. Several years later, the eleven Specialists left on Grojocko have gained the trust of the dictators and take advantage of it to flee. They go after Qwogg, hoping they can convince him to stop working on the side of the Council.

They locate him in the galaxy of the Greikos and have to fight their way before they eventually find him. Olw is wounded during the battle and the doctor who examines him makes a surprising discovery : he posseses an artificial kidney, leading the Specialists to believe that he has been awakened independently of his companions in the past. Olw doesn't remember anything about the operation.

Qwogg tells them that Arautyren no longer needs them to go through the interdimensional tunnels, and they are already looking for a fourth race to add to the Council. As Olw finally convinces Qwogg to give up his work, the Zgmahkonians capture them again. They are brought back into the Inter-Zone and put to sleep.

When Olw is awakened again, a new race has joined the Council : the Mastibeks. They were discovered by the Larens, who found out that they have the ability to improve the resistance of their spaceships. The Zgmahkonians are concerned about this and they want to force the Mastibeks to obey them instead. To achieve this, Arautymen intends to hurl four planets through the tunnels into the galaxy of the Mastibeks. The planets will turn into black holes and should avoid an upcoming catastrophe in their galaxy. Arautymen hopes to win the Mastibeks' trust this way.

Everything goes as planned and Arautymen takes Olw in the Mastibek galaxy to meet them. They are bodyless creatures who live in pyramids. As Olw starts talking with them, one of them penetrates his body and overpowers him.

The intruder explains that he has already used Olw's body in the past, in the Inter-Zone. In a distant past, he awakened him and used him to fly in an unknown galaxy in order to enjoy a body after such a long time. When he arrived in the Keloskian galaxy for the first time, their spaceship nearly got destroyed by its inhabitants and he developed an abolute hatred towards them. He decided to punish them by creating an artificial black hole that would eventually engulf their whole galaxy. Olw's body got injured during the operation and that's when he got his kidney replaced. Once he had accomplished his deed, the Mastibek erased Olw's memory and returned him to his cryogenic sleep.

Olw breaks free from the Mastibek's influence and returns to the Inter-Zone, where he informs his companions of what happened in the Keloskian galaxy. They decide to help them and fly there. First suspicious, the Keloskians eventually accept to talk with them and they come up with a solution : they create the Altrakulfth, a device that will reduce and contain the black hole. The experiment is a success and when the Specialists realize that the Keloskians are even brighter mathematicians than they are, they offer them to join the Council.

Thirty years later, the Specialists return into the Inter-Zone and are greeted by an aging and bitter Arautymen. The dictator, now assisted in his reign by six compatriots called the Guardians of the Void, informs them that they are going to be put to sleep again, but each on a separate world, to avoid further disobedience.

Olw is awakened by panicked Zgmahkonians some time later. Before he can explain what is happening, the people who awakened him are killed by other Zgmahkonians, which force him back to sleep.

This is where Olw's story ends. Rhodan is puzzled, since there was no mention of the seventh race of the Council. Olw is stunned : he has no knowledge of a seventh people, and for him, the Council is still called "Hetos of the Six".

Rhodan decides to awaken the other Specialists of the Night, in an attempt to gain them to their side. He knows that without them, they won't be able to leave the Inter-Zone. At the moment where he starts thinking about a plan, It manifests himself and mocks him for being so presomptuous.

Mitron, one of the Guardians of the Void, tells his colleagues that they need to eliminate the Terrans. Mitron knows about Olw's feelings for Py, another Specialist of the Night, therefore he thinks the Terrans will try to free her. The Guardians devise a plan and Mitron wakes Py up, telling her about the recent events. Even though he pretends that Olw has been kidnapped by the Terrans, Py suspects that he actually joined them willingfully. Nevertheless, she decides to play along and accepts to help the Guardians.

Olw tells Rhodan about Lennyth, the planet where Py is resting. The Terrans decide to land in a forbidden zone of the planet, where several Zgmahkonians have disappeared without trace in the past. As they start exploring the place, Kasom disappears. Pucky tries to find him and meets a psychic, plasma-based creature called Tgulv that was hiding in the caves of the planet. Glad to be freed, the creature tells Pucky about the Drushbars, constantly mutating organisms that live in the air of the planet and are reponsible for the disappearances. Kasoms is freed with Tgulv's help and the commando returns to their initial mission.

When they finally break inside the pyramid where Py is resting, the woman is gone. She left an encrypted message for Olw, telling him that she is trying to escape from the Guardians of the Void who, she thinks, are trying to manipulate her. The Terrans return on board the Sol, wondering how they will be able to find her now.

Py suspects the Guardians of the Void to have implanted something inside her brain that will allow them to track her. She decides to leave the Inter-Zone with a Zgmahkonian accomplice who owns a spaceship.

On the Sol, Icho Tolot seems to be suffering from some kind of disease : his skin is taking on a greenish hue and he now hides most of the time. Alaska tries to ask him what is going on but the Halutian won't tell. Rhodan asks Alaska to take a Zgmahkonian shuttle, the Mariachi, and explore the vicinity with Olw, hoping that the Specialist of the Night will be able to locate Py. He quickly finds her trace and the Mariachi enter the tunnel that lead to the Greiko galaxy.

In the tunnel, Py's spaceship is stopped by a Zgmahkonian spaceship. At this moment, the Guardians of the Void trigger the cell they implanted in her brain, incpacitating brutally the two crews. Only Py and the captain of the other spaceship, who happened to be wearing his spacesuit then, are untouched. He captures Py and tries to get her to tell what she is doing in the tunnel and what happened to the crews.

The Mariachi arrives near the two spaceships and Alaska, protected by his Suit of Annihilation, frees Py from the Zgmahkonian captain. Romeo and Julia perform a surgery on Py, removing the tracer, and the Mariachi returns safely to the Sol with the two Specialists of the Night on board.

During the debriefing, Dobrak explains that it is impossible for the Sol to be fitted with the necessary Zgmahkonian devices that would allow them to travel through the tunnel. Therefore, Perry Rhodan has no choice : a commando must be sent into the Laren galaxy in order to bring back the technology that allows them to travel through the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Icho Tolot is not getting better and Alaska finally gets the information from the Keloskian mathematician : the Halutian is about to give birth.

Volterhagen is a research planet where Laren scientists are trying to find a way to power their SVE-spaceships without using the Mastibek pyramids. So far, their efforts have not been successful. Pucky, Alaska and Icho Tolot teleport on the planet and quickly locate the Beraghskolth.

The Laren defenses on the planet are minimal, so the Terrans don't have much trouble stealing the Beraghskolth. During the fight, Icho Tolot gives birth to his kid but the baby Halutian dies shortly thereafter. The Laren scientists report that the device has been stolen by Zgmahkonians, since they are the only people who can travel through the interdimensional tunnels.

Shortly after they've found a suitable haven, spaceships from the Heavies spot them and capture them. As they are about to be taken away, the shadow ship of the legendary Vhrato appears and destroys the Heavies.

Vhrato turns out to be nothing else than the SZ-2, the second "Cell" of the Sol, which has finally reached the Milky Way after a one hundred and twenty year trip from the Maelstrom of Stars. The SZ-2, commanded by Senco Ahrat, has used the Vhrato legend to start motivating the resistance within the Milky Way, and using visual effects to make its appearance more impressive.

The SZ-2 contacts Atlan who quickly joins them and is delighted to learn that Perry Rhodan is still alive, although his whereabout in the Dhakkar zone are unkown. The SZ-2 is running out of energy, though, and it becomes vital that its supplies be replenished. Atlan knows of three supply planets that could refuel the SZ-2, but the first two are massively guarded by the Larens. The only possibility is Olymp, where the SZ-2 and Atlan decide to go.

When the SZ-2 enters the system of Olymp, Atlan is puzzled to discover that no Larens can be detected. A trap has indeed been laid out by Hotrenor-Taak on Olymp, who always suspected that Rhodan would return to the Milky Way. This could only happen with an interstellar ship using NU-Gas. Therefore, he blockaded two of the main NU-Gas factories and left Olymp unguarded, hoping to lure Rhodan into a trap. Of course, he doesn't know that Rhodan is not on board the SZ-2.

On Olymp, Argyris understands that the Larens are trying to trap the spaceship and decides to act. The SZ-2 starts loading up gas and just as the Larens are about to intervene, Argyris detonates a bomb in the plant. Using the ensuing chaos, the SZ-2 takes off safely. A man looking like Rhodan is chosen to impersonate him. Hotrenor-Taak sends the fake Marco Polo on the planet where the Vhrato Cult is the strongest: Tomallkeyn.

When the spaceship lands on Tomallkeyn, its inhabitants are subjugated and they immediately celebrate the return of Rhodan. The impostor explains that after the Earth was hurled through the solar transmitter, it emerged in a deserted area of space. It took the Marco Polo over a hundred years to come back into the Milky Way, and Rhodan had to leave Bully, Pucky and the rest of his officers on the Earth.

However, not everyone shares the enthusiasm of the population: two USO agents on Tomallkeyn suspect that something is wrong and they decide to secretly visit the Marco Polo. It's after they inspect the engines that they realize that the Marco Polo is indeed a fake, and they barely escape before the Larens can catch them.

Kor Kalmeck is a messenger sent by the New Einstein Imperium to invite two Halutians to attend a forthcoming conference in Provcon-Faust. On their way to the dark cloud, they come across the fake Marco Polo, who hails them. Kalmeck talks with Perry Rhodan and is quickly convinced to come on board and lead the impostor to Provcon-Faust, with the Halutian spaceship tagging along.

Kalmeck gives Rhodan directions to reach the first waypoint to the NEI, but he starts having doubts when he realizes the engines are not proton-based. He quickly realizes that this is not the real Marco Polo and knows that the only way he can get out of this situation is by leading the impostor to a fake destination.

A century ago, when Atlan created the NEI and based its headquarters in Provcon-Faust, he realized that he needed to create a decoy in case something would go wrong. He chose a dark cloud called Yolschor. The main planet of the planetary system they chose is called Orcsy, and is populated by Multi-Cyborgs. Seven of them are in control of a special installation that is able to project illusions of spaceships. These Cyborgs are called the Switch Masters.

Kalmeck decides to lead the Marco Polo, still followed in secret by SVE ships, to Yolschor. Also, the Zgmahkonians are actively looking for the Sol, and closing in every day, probably helped by the radiations emitted by the Beraghskolths.

Pucky embarks on a reconaissance shuttle in the Dakkarzone. During the flight, he is surprised to be able to detect thoughts, as Zgmahkonians are typically protected againt telepaths. The thoughts are coming from Owogg and Yaiska, two Specialists of the Night, who have just awakened from their long sleep and are being taken to an isolated planet, Kernoth, by the Zgmahkonians.

Pucky makes contact with Yaiska and the young girl, who happens to be a telepath as well, recognizes the mousebeaver as an ally. She lets him into her thoughts and Pucky learns her story, which dates back hundreds of years. Pucky learns a surprising detail about the origin of the Specialists of the Night: although it is believed that they were created by a Zgmahkonian called Galkon Erryog, Yaiska is convinced that it is actually a mysterious power that created the twelve Specialists of the Night, but she was put back in deep sleep before she could investigate the issue.

Pucky decides to rescue Owogg and Yaiska. He tries to teleport on board the Zgmahkonian spaceship but a parapsi shield captures him. The Zgmahkonian spaceship lands on Kernoth and Pucky manages to escape. He is picked up by the shuttle and flies back to the Sol. The past. Thousands of years ago, the Koltonians were ruling and spreading terror over several galaxies. Then they went through a phase of their evolution that killed almost all of them, and turned them into psychic beings. The few survivors tried to find a way to restore the once blooming Koltonian empire and devised a plan when they found the planet Grojocko, where the Zgmahkonians were living. The planet was threatened to be engulfed by a black hole back then, so the Koltonians decided to possess the body of their brightest scientist, Galkon Erryog.

Erryog received the technical training necessary to take the planet through the black hole. Once Grojocko arrived in the Dakkar-Dimension, Erryog, still under the Koltonian's influence, created the Specialists of the Nights, who turn out to be the mysterious first race of the Council of the Seven. Later, the Koltonians would use the twelve Specialists to rebuild their empire.

The present. As the Sol is getting close to Kernoth, Pucky falls under the influence of the Koltonians and learns the truth about the Specialists of the Night. He manages to fight back the psychic attack and the Koltonians retreat, for now. A mission is sent to Kernoth to free the Specialists. As soon as they are all gathered together, they unleash their psychic forces and destroy the fortress where they were being held prisoners. However, their shuttle is shot down as they are trying to escape and they remain stranded on Kernoth.

The Koltonian flagship materializes near the Sol and their leader demands an absolute surrender of both the Terrans and the Specialists. Rhodan complies. As soon as the Koltonian commandant boards the Sol, Rhodan starts the Beraghskolth and the Koltonian spaceship is destroyed with its crew.

Rhodan's numerous attempts to interrupt them fail, and he is forced to abandon the ship. Pushed by a mysterious instinct, Alaska Saedelaere decides to stay on board.

The black hole grows within the Sol and after it has reached a certain size, the twelve Specialists of the Night vanish, in order to follow their masters, the Koltonians, as they explain to Saedelaere. Protected by his Suit of Annihilation, Alaska decides to enter the black hole as well. The black hole disappears, and the Terran crew comes back into the Sol. When Rhodan sees that Alaska has disappeared, he decides to stay in the area for forty-eight hours before resuming course toward the Milky Way.

Alaska emerges in an unknown land, by a village. He finds statues that look familiar, and he later remembers he saw those same statues back on Earth, in the town of Tiahuanaco, in South America. Further explorations makes him discover a dwarf, who seems to be asleep. Alaska wakes him up and the creature says that his name is Callibso, and that he is a servant in the land of Derogwan. Then the dwarf runs away and kills another creature who was lying in the next room.

The dwarf explains that this way, Callibso can no longer return into a physical body. Suddenly, the attitude of the dwarf changes and Alaska realizes that somebody has taken possesion of his body. The entity introduces himself as the real Callibso.

Callibso is a a mysterious being capable of transfering his consciousness into bodies. In a distant past, he met with the Accalaurie Zeno who assigned him the task to look for the Suit of Annihilation. Callibso is a Cyno, and he has been in contact with the Karduuhls, who were in charge of driving the Swarm throughout the galaxies to spread life in the cosmos. Callibso tells Alaska about the Suit of Annihilation, who understands that his presence in Derogwan is no coincidence. He gives the Suit to Callibso.

The Cyno explains that Derogwan is connected to places in the universe through time wells, but now that he has no longer any physical body he can use, he has to remain a psychic being forever, since the dwarf isn't able to sustain his presence for too long or he will die.

On Alaska's request, Callibso accepts to give him a glimpse of the Earth through the time well. However, the vision reveals a deserted Earth, without any human being. The vision could be in the present or the future, even Callibso can't tell. Then Callibso leaves and tells Alaska that he has set the time well to return him to Earth, if he so chooses.

Torn between left all alone on Derogwan or on the Earth, Alaska decides to step into the time well. He materializes on the Earth in a distant future, in Tiahuanaco, and just like he feared, he is the only human being on the planet.

With the help of Dobrak, the Keloskian mathematician, Rhodan designs a plan to overthrow the Larens in the Milky Way over the next century. A fragment ship of the Posbis is first fitted with a Sextadim engine, thus making it plausible that it came from the Balayndagar galaxy. Twenty-six Keloskians go on board, supervies by Quohlfahrt, the half-posbi human. Then the Keloskians create a pseudo black hole at the periphery of the Milky Way, from which the fragment spaceships pretends to emerge.

As soon as they detect the shockwave, the Larens rush to the place where the black hole appeared, aware that only Keloskians have the technology to break a hole in the seventh dimension. They arrive just in time to see the Sol heavily firing upon the posbi spaceship, then vanishing, allegedly because it was outnumbered.

The Keloskians are brought on board the Laren spaceship and immediately demand to see Hotrenor-Taak. Quohlfahrt can't escape the Laren commando and is captured as well, although the Larens quickly believe that he is just a harmless human cyborg.

The Keloskians tell their story to Hotrenor-Taak... Perry Rhodan and a posbi spaceship appeared in Balayndagar and started to attack mercilessly the Keloskian worlds. During the fight, the Altrakulfth is destroyed, hence condemning the whole galaxy to disappear in the nearby black hole. Rhodan also took the opportunity to go to the Laren galaxy and steal the Beraghskolth.

The Keloskians fought back and managed to capture the fragment spaceship, then they escaped. Only twenty-six of them survived. The Keloskian narrator tells Hotrenor-Taak that there is only one explanation: Rhodan must have been informed by a member of the Council of the Seven about Balayndagar and the Beraghskolth.

Initiall distrustful, Hotrenor-Taak eventually believes the Keloskians and decides to break from the Council, in an attempt at identifying the traitor. He demands that from now on, the Keloskians work for him exclusively and help him finally squash the NEI and also identify the traitor. The Keloskians accept.

Dobrak proceeds to explain to Rhodan the nature of the order of the universe. This model is similar to an onion, with each layer representing a higher power. The first layer is the basic civilization. The second layer is for civilizations that have achieved space travel. The third layer is populated by superintelligences, which have control over entire galaxies and clusters and care for all living creatures residing there.

Superintelligences are fundamentally good, but just like everyone else, they seek to expand the area they control. Dobrak believes that It is assisting the Terrans because it will serve His agenda.

They manage to intercept one of them and find out that the containers are filled with some gooey substance. Outnumbered, the Terrans are forced to flee in front of the invaders.

The aliens are called Hulkoos, and they are the servants of the Incarnation Clermac. A long time ago, they met the Incarnation and tried to fight it. They quickly realized that they had more to gain by cooperating with it, and willingfully accepted to serve it instead. On the Earth, they are currently readying the place for the arrival of an entity they refer to as "Small Majesty", whose goal is to take the whole population under its mental influence.

The Modul is a research station sent by the Empress of Therm to explore the galaxies in search of life. It possesses a crew of seventy scientists, and Langur used to be one of them. Afraid that Langur might be captured by Bardioc, the Modul's commander, an entity called s-Tarvior, goes on a mission to locate and kill the scientist. His suspicions about the Word and the fact that they are Vernoc agents are met with hostility and all the Terrans except two are soon imprisoned to stop them from investigating.

The other two Terrans discover the body of a half-made Feyerdalian. They reach the conclusion that the Vernoc agents are shapeshifters similar to those that the Terrans once faced in the past, and that they probably intend to penetrate inside the headquarters by taking the appearance of one of them.

The Terran crew, helped by a robot, escape from their prison and rush to the headquarters. When they arrive, they realize that the enemy has already taken control of the base. Rhodan barely escapes the death from a shapeshifter who had taken the appearance of the robot. The alien dies when he touches Cesynthra's amulet, pronouncing two words: "Gys Voolbeerah" and "Tba".

Rhodan makes contact with one of the few survivors of the base, who tells him that the base will self-destruct soon. The unidentified entity assigns a mission to Rhodan: the Module, a star base collecting information on the points of contacts between the Spheres of Influence of Bardioc and the Empress of Therm, has broken down and needs assistance. Rhodan must fly to the coordinates given by the entity and rescue the Module. On board the module is a computer called Comp, which contains vital information for the Empress of Therm. The Terrans leave the base shortly before it explodes and are picked up by the Sol.

When the Terrans land on Goshmo Castle, they set off in search of survivors. While they are away, the Mucyrians, also called Fireflies, surround their spaceship and kidnap Bluff Pollard. The young man is still in a state of mental confusion after he got infected by the brain substance in Namsos, and the Mucyrians make him their new god.

The Terrans try to rescue him but Bluff tells them he wants to stay on Goshmo Castle. The Terrans learn from the Mucyrians that their station has been destroyed, but they decide to investigate anyway. They find out that four humans have been murdered but there is one survivor, a young woman called Vleeny Oltruun. The Terra Patrol now knows that it's only the people on the Earth who vanished, hence proving that the disappearance of the human race was not a natural phenomenon.

Meanwhile, the radiation of the giant brain reaches Terrania, and the Terrans realize that they will have to leave soon. Far away, the incarnation Clermac decides that the time has come to intervene on the Earth.

In an attempt to protect the Terrans against the impulses from the Little Majesy in Namsos, Alaska experiments with the Grlko net, which in the past protected the humans against the effets of the Swarm. The experiment goes bad and Alaska falls under the influence from the brain. He hijacks the Hops and with Douc Langur on board, they both head for Namsos.

When they get there, Alaska is greeted by the Hulkoo commander, Progmyrsch, but Langur manages to escape. He decides to stick around, hoping he can free his friend from the aliens. Alaska is taken to a big spaceship where he meets with the Incarnation Clermac, which appears under the form of his interlocutor in a hovering bubble.

Clermac is at the service of Bardioc, along with two other incarnations called Shernoc and Vernoc. The incarnation tells Alaska that Bardioc is a powerful super-intelligence ruling over thousands of planets, each of them hosting a Little Majesty that subdues the population so they serve the super-intelligence. Bardioc is currently involved in a fight against the Empress of Therm, another super-intelligence. Bardioc intends to create a fourth incarnation, which will be more powerful than the other three.

During his questioning, Alaska removes his mask and he uses the ensuing chaos wreaked upon the Hulkoos to escape. Clermac decides to let him go, hoping Alaska will lead him to the other Terrans.

Back in Imperium Alpha, Alaska tells his compatriots everything he learned. The Terrans become very suspicious about Douc Langur, whom they think might be a spy sent by the Empress of Therm. Langur denies it and accepts to subject himself and his calculator, Logikor, to a thorough examination. The analysis of the computer reveals a network of crystalline threads, which rings a bell in Langur's mind, but his memory is still not coming back to him. However, his good will convince the Terrans that at least consciously, he's not their enemy.

Alaska begins to wonder if the abduction of the human race was not a preemptive move made in order to protect the Terrans. If they hadn't vanished, they would probably be under the influence of the Little Majesty by now.

Tehlarbloe is a Feyerdalian researcher on Moeckdoehne, the Feyerdalian homeworld. He thinks that ever since his people started serving the Empress of Therm, they have lost their spirit of adventure and innovation. Therefore, he seeks a way to break what he deems is a slavery from the superintelligence. He is completing his work on a device that will deactivate all the observation elements that the Empress has scattered on all the planets that are under her control. As he is about to finish the device, his lab is stormed by the secret services, led by a Feyerdalian named Qartane, and he is arrested.

He is sentenced to have his memories erased, but soon thereafter, the news about what happened in Proehndome reaches Moeckdoehne. The Feyerdalians are stunned to learn that the Empress of Therm destroyed her own Contact Circle but most of all, assigned to a foreigner a task that should have been theirs. Seeing a competitor in Rhodan, the Feyerdalians decide to side with Tehlarbloe in order to destroy the Sol. The scientist completes his work on the device and they start neutralizing the observation elements one by one.

As the work progresses, Tehlarbloe is kidnapped by the Empress. He is taken to the Contact Cirle where the Empress tells him she wanted to know him better.

On the Sol, Rhodan decides not to follow the Empress's orders right away. They head for Kaylaandor, a system that contains another Contact Circle, where Rhodan wants to get in touch with the Empress in order to get more details.

As Qartane is about to take off with a big fleet in order to attack Rhodan, Tehlarbloe comes back and pretends that he has been kidnapped by their political enemies. Qartane can tell that something has changed in the scientist, but he can't really see what. The fleet takes off and heads for Kaylaandor.

Perry Rhodan lands on the second planet of the Kaylaandor system, while Atlan remains on the Sol. On the planet, Rhodan enters the Inner Circle, but he can clearly sense the veiled hostility of the Feyerdalians, who only cooperate because they are forced to. Rhodan receives confirmation from the Empress of Therm that the Terrans must find the Module, which contains vital information. In exchange, the super-intelligence will help the Terrans to locate the Earth. However, the Empress refuses to answer any questions related to Bardioc and she decides to hold Rhodan's group prisoner for no reason.

The fleet led by Qartane arrives in the Kaylaandor system but it remains hidden from the planets, which makes Atlan wonder about the intentions of the newcomers. Worried that Rhodan didn't give signs of life, Atlan dispatches Pucky and Ras Tschubai on the planet, while sending an ultimatum to the Feyerdalians to disclose the whereabouts of the Terran delegation. The mutants make contact with Rhodan but realize then that their parapsychic faculties have been neutralized.

Tehlarbloe lands on the planet as well and makes contact with Rhodan. He explains the situation to him and discloses the super-intelligence's intentions: the Empress of Therm is encouraging a conflict between the Terrans and the Feyerdalians, in order to see who will come out as the winner, and also in an attempt to shake the Feyerdalian people from its lethargy. This is the reason why the super-intelligence is keeping Rhodan and his group captive for the moment. Then Tehlarbloe leaves and returns on board of Qartane's fleet.

Atlan's ultimatum runs out and the Sol starts attacking the planet, although avoiding carefully to kill Feyerdalians. In the same time, Qartane's fleeet attacks and the Sol is forced to break off its three sections in order to fight back. A commando made of mutants lands on the planet and soon, the Feyerdalians are forced to capitulate. They eventually acknowledge Rhodan as the new emissary of the Empress of Therm and guarantee that the Feyerdalians will not get in the way.

Rhodan is now free to start the investigation on the disappearance of the Module.

Shortly thereafter, a Hulkoo commander named Kaarmansch Xes patrolling in the area notices that the trap has been set off and notifies his superiors. Then he sends spaceship inside the cloud to destroy the Module.

Inside the cloud, the researchers of the Empress of Therm, who all exhibit a similar loss of memory as Douc Langur about their mission and who they work for, try to fight back. Several ships are destroyed and the Hulkoos capture a researcher. Others manage to get together and try to find the Module. The prisoner manages to cause some damage in the Hulkoo ship before he gets killed.

The Sol approaches the cloud and when Kaarmansch Xes detects it, he orders his fleet to withdraw from the cloud.

This entity is immaterial and spends its life manipulating live beings by planting thoughts and illusions in their minds. When the star exploded, the Graviholl found shelter in one of the debris of the planet, and it is now wandering in the matter cloud.

The Graviholl influences the thoughts of Tschubai and the other passengers of the Silkworm, making them believe they have been transported to diverse fantasy worlds. The Hulkoos are not spared either, and one of them gets expelled from the spaceship because his commander thought that he was rebelling against Clermac.

The Silkworm gets attracted to the asteroid and lands there. The Terrans rescue three researchers, Tail Daloor, Froul Kaveer and Ranc Poser. The spaceship they used to reach the asteroid gets destroyed by the Hulkoos but Tschubai manages to save their life at the last minute. The Silkworm is forced to take off to escape the Hulkoo spaceship, leaving Galto Quohlfahrt and Icho Tolot stranded on the asteroid, who soon discover the body of the dead Hulkoo. The Silkworm reaches the Sol and Rhodan immediately dispatches the SZ-1 to rescue them.

The Graviholl reveals its presence to Quohlfahrt and explains to him that he will take control of the SZ-1 as soon as it appears. Under the influence of the entity, Quohlfahrt is forced to lure the SZ-1 near the asteroid, but as the Graviholl gathers its forces to teleport itself on the SZ-1, the Terran regains his senses and manages to warn Rhodan at the last minute. The spaceship erects its Paratron shield and the Graviholl is hurled in hyperspace.

As the Sol gets ready to enter the Cousterbouth cloud, Felmer Lloyd detects strong parapsychic skills in a young Sol-born person, Bjo Breiskoll. Lloyd takes the young mutant on board the central section of the Sol, which then flies inside the cloud.

With the help of Breiskoll, Rhodan finds the Module, which turns out to be a 220 kilometer big base located on a half-moon. The Hulkoos have already arrived there but Rhodan manages to land on the Module with a small commando, led by the researchers.

The scientists first look for an entity called s-Tarvior, which is the leader of a group of seventy scientists. The s-Tarvior acknowledges the Terrans as working for the Empress of Therm and lead them to the Comp, a tower-like structure that's thirty-two meter high, ten meter in radius and is mostly made of very thin crystal-like fibers.

Joscan Hellmut receives the visit of a mysterious bright light that subjugates him. Abel Waringer soon realizes that not only is the Comp more than a data storage, it also seems to have taken control of the whole ship.

Waringer manages to slow down Seneca and by simulating the echoes of nearby Hulkoo spaceships, he forces the Comp to negociate with the Terrans. The Comp tells Rhodan that all it wants is to be taken to the Empress of Therm. The Comp passes a contract with the Terrans, but it soon betrays it by isolating Seneca in a force field and regaining control of the spaceship.

Rhodan has no other choice than to call a general evacuation of the Sol, hoping that the Comp will recognize that it needs the Terran crew to reach the Empress of Therm. The Terran shuttles enter the orbit of a planet they call Alamo and soon receive the order from the Comp to either surrender or be destroyed. One of the crewmembers stayed on board manages to sabotage the transform cannons on board the Sol, and when the Comp realizes that it cannot fire on the Terrans, it has to give in. 792 - Hilfe aus Zeit und Raum
Help from time and space
Clark Darlton

In the solar system, an agent of the NEI notices that the sun Goblin is emitting increasing five-dimensional radiations. The news is transmitted to Gaea where Tifflor and Tekener come to the conclusion that it might mean the sun is getting ready to accept an incoming transmission. Tifflor heads for the solar system to investigate.

The radiation is actually part of a complex plot of the Larens. Hotrenor-Taak has devised a way to emit a radiation that will cause cell activators in the vicinity to explode. But before he can deploy the trap, he needs to find a cell activator in order to adjust the frequency. Three cell activators are in the possession of three Heavies, which have never been found so far, but the Laren knows that Tifflor has one too, hence the trap.

On No,a small planet in the East Side sector, a colon finds Harno, the energetic creature that once helped the Terrans. Harno is running out of energy but manages to tell the colons about the Laren trap. The colons provide enough energy for Harno to teleport on board Tifflor's spaceship and let him know about the trap.

Hotrenor Taak has launched the hunt for the three missing cell activators. The only known fact is that they are in the possession of three Etrusians, former members of the Carsual federation. One of them has settled on an ice asteroid.

A Terranian called Cedar Tautz learns about the hunt and decides to warn Runeme Shilter, one of the three Ertrusians. Cedar Tautz is actually a Shapeshifter called Undaak, who hopes that resisting the Larens will convince Rhodan to help him restore an order called the Tba.

Cedar Tautz arrives in the vicinity of the asteroid just as four SVE-spaceships capture Shilter, who is then taken to Rolfth. Tautz decides to contact the NEI to let them know what happened.

On Rolfth, Hotrenor-Taak takes possession of Shilter's cell activator, causing the Etrusian's death. Shilter manages to make contact with Tifflor and explains Hotrenor Taak's plan: the Laren hopes that when Tifflor's cell activator explodes, it will give away the location of the NEI.

Tifflor learns about Frascati, who carries another cell activator. He flies to Fragile, the planet where Frascati has been spotted, and arrives as Vigeland just took Frascati's cell activator. The Etrusian tells Tifflor he wants to leave the Milky Way.

Hotrenor-Taak finalizes the cell activator exploder device, which causes an exponential multiplication of cells in human bodies, hence causing the cell activator to overheat and blow up. 30,000 SVE spaceships and 25,000 Heavy ships are then deployed across the Milky Way with the device on board.

When the NEI realizes that the radiation is operational, Tifflor flies away from Gaia and he sends Tekener, who has no idea what's going on, to the World of a Hundred Suns.

On the Sol, Irmina Kotschistowa discovers Antapex, a mutant who had been hiding for years. Antapex has the ability to restore his organs and also seems to share some kind of connection witht he Comp. He warns Rhodan about a forthcoming danger coming from a crystal carrier called Choolk.

After flying for twenty-thousand light years, the Sol arrives in a deserted area of space where a fifty-meter spaceship surrounded by a ring soon appears. The pilot, who calls himself Choolk, comes on board the Sol to inspect the Comp. He says he is a bodyguard for the Empress of Therm -- which he refers to as Duuhrt -- and carries a crystal on his chest, that looks like the one on the Comp.

Choolk tells Rhodan that the plans have changed and that they must go to his homeworld, Alwuurk. Rhodan refuses and Choolk instructs the Comp to take over the Sol. The Comp deploys field lines across the Sol, allowing Choolk to move across the spaceship and to protect him with a force field that the mutants cannot seem to breach.

With the help of Antapex, Rhodan manages to go on board Choolk's spaceship, where he steals documents. The documents reveal that Choolk's peoples are subdued by their crystal, which are engraved in their chest by the Empress of Therm when they are born. Choolk becomes absorbed by the Comp and when a fleet of two hundred more ships appear, Rhodan has no choice but obey. The Sol heads for Alwuurk.

Ras Tschubai and Pucky explore the planet and find out that the Choolks are divided in seventeen castes when they are born by a secondary Comp, which assigns the crystals. When they die, their crystal returns to the Comp, hence insuring that the population of the Choolk remains constant.

The teleporters penetrate in the Valley of Life, where the young Choolks are born, and they set off the alarm and steal an egg. The radiations of the Comp neutralize the teleporters, who are soon captured and then returned to the Sol.
