600 - Die unsichtbare Grenze
The Invisible Border
Kurt Mahr

In the darkness of infinity two competing entities face each other. They observe the beginning of a new crisis.

In 3456 the Solar Imperium has overcome all difficulties in the aftermath of the Swarm. The other human empires, the Neo-Arkonide states and the Arkonide Imperium are disorganized again.

On August 20 the MARCO POLO, in orbit around Pluto, takes part in the large Anti-Nug project. The new Schwarzschild-Nug power plant must be tested. It mixes antimatter with matter to create the Schwarzschild effect, which in turn, releases huge, unimaginable amounts of energy. The attempt fails. The free quantities of energy that are released project the MARCO POLO into a parallel universe, in effect an anti-universe, which differs from the real universe by small details. The personalities of its inhabitants are opposed precisely. When the MARCO POLO lands on the Earth II, Perry Rhodan II and the other responsible persons, who are greedy, brutal and destitute of scruples, are able to stop and capture the real Perry Rhodan (Perry Rhodan I) and his crew. The mutants are held captive in the MARCO POLO. On August 25th, Rhodan I escapes. He decides to visit Tycho Ramath II. In the real universe, Tycho Ramath’s double (Tycho Ramath I) led a slanderous campaign at the time of the elections of 3450 and tried to murder Perry Rhodan. In the parallel anti-universe, Tycho Ramath II is a decent and honorable man. With the help of Ramath II’s organization, which works also against the government, the prisoners are freed and brought back to the MARCO POLO. In spite of all opposition Perry Rhodan I is able to flee with the MARCO POLO into space.

601 - Die falschen Mutanten
The False Mutants
William Voltz

The two entities pursue their game with mental weapons. They choose to represent the two powers distributed on several universes.

Ras Tschubai II leaves the Sol System II with the MARCO POLO which he wants to sabotage. Ras Tschubai I wakes up in Imperium Alpha II after being paralyzed during the successful escape of the MARCO POLO from Earth. He is forced to become acquainted with the terror regime of Perry Rhodan II and then succeeds in damaging the MARCO POLO II. When Rhodan II threatens to have the responsible security officers executed, the teleporter surrenders. He is interrogated and tortured by Deighton. The Ara physician who treats him lets Tschubai escape.

Meanwhile, Tschubai II succeeds in concealing his true identity on the MARCO POLO I. Perry Rhodan I and his crew attempts to take on some provisions in the Vega System but are unsuccessful. The MARCO POLO I then carries out a diversionary maneuver in the Eugaul System (Plophos) before traveling secretly to the planet Olymp. On September 2, 3456, Ras Tschubai II accompanies Perry Rhodan and Atlan on Olymp. They want to visit Bount Terhera. Bount Terhera’s double in Perry Rhodan’s universe of origin fought with criminal methods. In this parallel universe, Terhera is on the side of good and has been forced to retire on the planet Olymp. It appears that only the Terrans of the Sol System have a character opposed to their doubles. At the time of the meeting with Terhera II, Tschubai II tries to kill Rhodan. He is stopped by Atlan who shoots and kills him. Rhodan and Terhera II agree to form an alliance in order to build a resistance organization against Rhodan II. Then, in order to divert the attention from Terhera II, Rhodan and Atlan simulate an attempted contact with Anson Argyris II. Ultimately, they are successful in returning to the MARCO POLO.

The Jump To Luna

A plan to rescue Ras Tschubai is developed by Pucky and approved by Perry Rhodan. Pucky teleports himself with Mentro Kosum and Menesh Kuruzin from a Gazelle onto the surface of Olymp. With the help of Bount Terhera II they arrive by way of the Transmitter System on Earth in a container. Pucky picks up the trail of Ras Tschubaï in West Africa. He brings him to safety just as the mutant is located and confronted by Pucky II. The mousebeaver and his companions hide for several days in Antarctica, in the small township of Nordecaal. Its inhabitants have voluntarily withdrawn from civilization and silently oppose the Terran government. They then reach the Moon by teleportation where they seize a Gazelle in a secret base whose existence is only known by Rhodan/Rhodan II. When Pucky learns that some Terran troops have occupied Nordecaal he returns to Antarctica and saves his new friends (and allies) there. He then rejoins the Gazelle. On September 16, 3456, the small vessel reaches the agreed upon rendezvous point with the MARCO POLO. The rendezvous point is the red sun Nogulus, on the south periphery of the Milky Way. The rescue action to retrieve Ras Tschubai from Earth has been successfully concluded.

603 - Planet der Ritterspiele
Planet Of The Knight Games
H.G. Ewers

The MARCO POLO arrives at the asteroid Honeycomb 1000, the present residence of the Old Mutants. Perry Rhodan and his companions only finds the two Oxtorners, Powlor Ortokur II and Neryman Tulocky II. Unlike all the native Terrans they have met so far, the Oxtorners’ characters are identical to those of their doubles in the original universe. They inform Rhodan I that nineteen days earlier the Old Mutants were removed by Atlan II. Seventeen tons of PEW metal are missing from the asteroid.

The two Oxtorners advise Perry Rhodan and the crew of the MARCO POLO to go to Palpyron, the second planet of the Taurola-Pan System. Its inhabitants, descended from Arkonide colonists, have developed a type of medieval culture. Perry Rhodan, Atlan, Dalaimoc Rorvic, Tatcher a Hainu, Pucky and the two Oxtorners land on the planet, disguised as Palpyronien Knights. They locate the Old Mutants Kitai Ishibashi and Ralf Marten. They are consolidated in their bodies by armor made of PEW metal. They prove to be adversaries of Rhodan II and enthusiastically become allies of Perry Rhodan I. The PEW metal, located in a temple on Palpyron, is brought on board the MARCO POLO. The vessel leaves Palpyron before a SOS that had been triggered involuntarily at the temple by Dalaimoc Rorvic attracts the enemy's attention to the Taurola-Pan System.

604 - Triumph der Gewalt
The Triumph Of Violence
Ernst Vlcek

After the success on HONEYCOMB 1000, Perry Rhodan I and the MARCO POLO I go on the search for further allies. On Atlan’s suggestion Rhodan decides to travel to Tschirmayn, where the Arkonide attempted to create a colony of New-Arkonides from degenerate Arkonides through gene-experiments 150 years ago.

However also Perry Rhodan II is not idle: meanwhile, the Chief Cosmo-psychologist, Dr. Thunar Eysbert II, has found out that the personnel of the real Perry Rhodan is organized democratically, and consequently not only he alone makes decisions. He and Atlan da Gonozal II therefore comes also to the result, that Tschirmayn must be the nearest goal of the MARCO POLO. They decide to also fly there and to pass themselves off as the positive Perry Rhodan and Atlan. Rhodan II puts the old crew of the MARCO POLO II together again and goes on the trip, during which he practices the role of the nice, obliging human being - he attempts to make himself think and act more like Rhodan I. Meanwhile, Fellmer Lloyd II lies dying, since his cell activator was stolen from him. However, shortly before his death he gets it back from Pucky II, who had hidden it as part of his vicious understanding of fun.

Together with Atlan II and Lord Zwiebus II, Rhodan II lands on Tschirmayn and slips into his antipodean role there. Actually they succeed with convincing admiral Ankur and all the other New Arkonides that they are the visitors from the foreign universe; so it is only logical that Ankur leads them through the secret installations of the Anti-Terran resistance movement and actually reveals to them all secrets. The repressed hate of Rhodan II and his impatience becomes bigger from day to day. Meanwhile, the real MARCO POLO I approaches the system. However, it proceeds so carefully on that occasion that the hidden Terran battle-ships are discovered in the orientation shadow (protections) of the sun and seizes the escape in time. When Rhodan II is informed of the successful escape of the MARCO POLO I, he doesn't see any more reason to carry on his role as Rhodan I. He drops his mask and enjoys his revenge to the full. First he destroys the entire Arkonide fleet, and then, after that, changes the planet Tschirmayn into an atomic hell. Finally, he even induces the star to explode into a supernova.

605 - Sprung nach GALAX-Zero
Jump To GALAX-Zero
Hans Kneifel

Shortly after the annihilation of Tchirmayn by the MARCO POLO II is announced throughout the galaxy, Galbraith Deighton II visits GALAX-Zero. The station, which is the central galactic news-dispatcher, is led by Solar Marshal Orana Sestore II, the friend of the dictator Perry Rhodan II. The chief of the solar defense has devised a plan to lure the real Perry Rhodan into a trap; a plan, with which Orana Sestore II should function as bait.

At first, Orana fights against the plan. However, before Deighton’s threat to torture her father Deyko Sestore to death within six days, she must capitulate. A feigned message is written and sent with her signal. The message states that she is a leader of a resistance organization. The message is admittedly received by the MARCO POLO immediately, but Perry and Atlan are clear on that occasion that it can only be about a trap. To the appearance they accept the invitation from Orana II in the hope that it brings them nearer to the return into their home universe.

Perry Rhodan and Orana Sestore II arrange, per hyper-radio, a meeting in the interstellar space, and, thus, Orana leaves GALAX-Zero on board of a Space-Jet. Her thoughts are searched by Pucky and Fellmer Lloyd, but they find nothing vicious in them. However, parts of her memory seem to be blocked. This block relaxes shortly after the first juncture with Perry Rhodan, and she confesses to him that it was her order to lure him into a trap on Humphyr II. Perry and Atlan decide to turn the tables on Deighton II and to attack GALAX-Zero directly in order to free Orana’s father.

Perry, Atlan, Pucky, Fellmer Lloyd, Irmina Kotschistowa, Icho Tolot and the Paladin-Robot set out on this mission. It was however exactly that with what their negative personalities had reckoned. They knew that Orana II was not reliable and that Perry could not resist the temptation to free Deyko Sestore. Accordingly, hundreds of Solar Defense Agents enter into action at the moment as the commando team is teleported by Pucky I on board of the station. A vehement fight, in whose course Deighton II kills Deyko Sestore, breaks out. As a result, Orana II loses her nerve and transmits into the energy-station of GALAX-Zero where she brings the reactors of the station to an unstoppable nuclear reaction. Afterwards, she comes back to Perry in order to warn him of the impending explosion of the station. However, she is killed by an exploding Transmitter shortly after that. As a result of her warning, Perry Rhodan I can flee with his commando team, but also Rhodan II, Atlan II and Deighton II succeed with the escape in time.

606 - Marathon der Raumschiffe
Marathon Of The Spaceships
Kurt Mahr

Taking place once every ten years, the Marathon of the Spaceships is shortly imminent in the Milky Way. As always, also Perry Rhodan II will take part in it. He has won the competition continuously for 800 years and unscrupulously applies every insidious trick for the victory: from the betrayal of the air route by Atlan II up to killing off all serious adversaries. This year, his murder attack is for the Haluter Terengi San, who however, manages to barely survive the attack and swears revenge on Rhodan II and the assassin Kalle Wessel.

Meanwhile, the scientists of both MARCO POLOs have determined the single escape possibility from the dilemma of the parallel universe: the respective Perry Rhodan must kill his antipodean. Since Atlan as member of the interstellar marathon-committee knows the inter-goals of the marathon from his own universe, Rhodan I decides to set a trap on the route for his opponent. Before hand, however, he must see for himself that the data is accurate also in the anti-universe. For this purpose, two officers of the MARCO POLO - Paul Reit and Mintru Kansel - fly to the planet Kano-Kano, on which the MARCO POLO II is at the moment. They are disguised as Space Tramps. Having hardly arrived there, they begin to boast loudly that they will win the race without problems, since they possess secret data, that guarantee them the victory. Eventually Rhodan II is alerted by his subordinates about the two disguised Space Tramps and wants to find out the reason for their self-confidence. He sends Kalle Wessel to the two Tramps. Wessel’s mission is to buy the information from them in order to determine if it is real or not.

The data turns out to contain the correct coordinates, and so Rhodan II decides to have the two Space Tramps killed. Wessel is sent out once again to carry out this mission. However, as he tries to get into the spaceship of the Tramps, the angry Terengi San appears, saves the two men, and drags the unconscious Wessel with himself in order to enjoy his revenge to the full. Reit and Kansel have successfully completed their mission and leave Kano-Kano on the return trip to the MARCO POLO I which is located in the orientation protection of the sun Verko-Voy, the first goal of the marathon-participants.

After approximately six days, the MARCO POLO II appears in the system, and the MARCO POLO I goes on the attack. Since the mistake in their Nugas Black Field Reactors have already been corrected, Rhodan expects that his ship now has the upper hand in any contest between the two ships. And he is correct! The first volley of the MARCO POLO I breaks through the energy protection shield of the MARCO POLO II and cripples it. Rhodan II, together with Atlan II, seizes the escape and sets out for the rescue hangars. However shortly before they can climb into a space-lentil, Roi Danton II appears, shoots Atlan II and takes his place at his father's side.

As Rhodan locates the start of the mini-spaceship, he sets out in pursuit together with Atlan in a Space-Jet. In the meantime, the MARCO POLO II passes in a gigantic explosion.

Arena Ice World

The Space Jet of Perry Rhodan and Atlan pursues the Space Lentil of Perry Rhodan II and Roi Danton II as far as to the surface of the planet D-Muner, on which a secret base of the USO is located. They are successful in shooting and disabling the Space Lentil shortly before it lands. However, the Space Jet also sustains a hit and crashes in the immediate proximity. Thus begins a murderous race to reach the USO-Base over 6,000 kilometers away, because whoever reaches this base first will ultimately win and survive. Between the adversaries, a psycho-war develops, interrupted again and again by exchanges of fire. Technical complications add on top of this as the spacesuit of Perry Rhodan II first shows a defect and the flight-aggregate of Roi Danton II’s spacesuit later quits. He is left behind by his father with the order to waylay their pursuers.

Danton II sets up an ambush and shoots at Rhodan I and Atlan I, as soon as they appear. Atlan takes up the confrontation while Perry Rhodan hurries after his double further. After approximately one hour, Atlan succeeds in winning the upper hand over his adversary and kills Roi Danton II. Shocked by the death of the double of Roi Danton, Atlan buries him first before he gets started again with the pursuit. Meanwhile, the two Rhodans are only a few kilometers from the USO-Base and approximately 1,000 meters from each other distant. Again, a fire-skirmish between the two, who call each other "brother" meanwhile, takes place during which Rhodan II is hit in the right arm. He appeals to the fairness of Rhodan I to continue the duel under the same conditions. He meets Rhodan I’s sore point with this verbal interchange. Rhodan wants to put away his Desintegrator as Rhodan II uses the opportunity for an attack. The quick thinking Rhodan I responds instantaneously and mortally wounds Rhodan II. The two "brothers" can still exchange some last words together, and Rhodan II recognizes in dying that he became a victim of his own mistrust. After his death, a huge structure disruption hurls Perry Rhodan, Atlan and the entire MARCO POLO back into their standard universe. The trip into the parallel-world has finished.

In this moment, nobody still suspects that this is only the start of a cosmic chess game between IT and ANTI-IT. They don’t suspect that the MARCO POLO was placed in the parallel universe by ANTI-IT and was then transported back to the standard universe by IT (once Rhodan I had killed Rhodan II). Now ANTI-IT is ready to begin the next phase of the cosmic chess game.

608 - Auf den Spuren der PAD
On The Trail Of The PAD
Clark Darlton

Thirteen days have passed since the return of the MARCO POLO from the parallel universe. The crew enjoys its leisure time and a well-deserved vacation. However the Chief Psychologist, Dr. Thunar Eysbert, determines that the crew, to include himself, are undergoing a change. Every form of sense of duty seems to have disappeared in the men who now only consider their hobbies as important. And although this illness attacks also him, Eysbert decides to tell Perry Rhodan about it.

However also Perry Rhodan is on vacation, and so Eysbert establishes contact with Pucky and Icho Tolot, that also became distrustful of him since he is susceptible to and displays the symptoms of the illness that he himself has named the PAD-Epidemic (Plague). Pucky, Icho Talot and Eysbert tell Reginald Bell and Galbraith Deighton about their suspicions and decide to contact Rhodan. However Rhodan disregards their warnings and doesn't dream of interrupting his vacation on Fiji and leaving his vacation-flirt. Pucky comes back again disappointed and now tries to find Atlan.

In the meantime, some crew members of the MARCO POLO behave strangely. Mart Hung-Chuin, the chief physicist of the ship, plunges into his work and disregards safety measures, so that he detonates a whole research-asteroid. With Major Byerlin, racism suddenly breaks out, and he attacks a Springer-base. Finally, Fellmer Lloyd, who is on vacation on Wolf 28, disregards the command to return to Terrania City as quickly as possible, because he would rather spend his time collecting minerals.

After all these incidents, Atlan and Bell are convinced of the existence and the dangerousness of the PAD-Epidemic. They begin by looking for all 8,000 crew members of the MARCO POLO and accommodating them in a quarantine-station on the moon in order to be able to observe them better. One of the first realizations is that the symptoms of the epidemic can be overcome through mere willpower. Eysbert himself is the best example of this.

The single one, that still appears unimpressed, is Perry Rhodan, who still enjoys his vacation on his island.

609 - Operation Sternstunde
Operation Star-Hour

Dalaimoc Rorvic and Tatcher a Hainu land with the light cruiser PORTO CERVO on the planet Tsittok in order to bring back three crewmembers of the MARCO POLO to the earth. However as they return to the ship they find themselves locked out by some crew members who behave as if they are crazy. One thing is now certain: The PAD Epidemic is contagious. For the first time, it has also affected people, who didn't travel into the parallel universe. Eventually they regain control of the PORTO CERVO.

Due to a ship transmitter which is wrongly adjusted, instead of returning back to earth, Rorvic and a Hainu find themselves on a base of the Aras, who capture and want to examine them. However, Rorvic and Hainu succeed with the escape and in the second attempt with the transmitter finally return to Imperium-Alpha. There, Atlan gives them the command to seek out and bring back Roi Danton, who seemingly also suffers from the PAD Epidemic and presently resides in Versailles as the Sun King Louis XIV. Disguised as Molière and Tartuffe, they reach Roi Danton. After Tatcher discovers an appliance in Roi’s scepter, which obviously softens the mental resistance of the Terran, they also succeed with awakening Danton’s feelings of responsibility again. In the meantime, almost the entire Earth is affected by the PAD, with the exception of all the aliens to include the Arkonides, Springers, Akonides and Haluter.

Removed some light-years from the earth, representatives of the Springers, Antis, Akonides and Aras meet at the same time and decide to take advantage of the weakness of the earth in order to deliver a devastating blow against the Solar Imperium. With their so-called Operation Star Hour they plan to travel to earth and assassinate Perry Rhodan and Atlan. They succeed in landing on Mars and traveling by transmitter to earth. There, however, their plans are uncovered by Tatcher a Hainu who eavesdrops on them. Thus, he and Rorvic can intervene in the last moment and save Atlan and the Great Administrator. The assassins attempt an escape. However, the ship of the assassins is destroyed while still in the Sol System by the unusually aggressive Atlan. An evaluation by NATHAN yields that also all Lemurian descendants (i.e. Arkonides, Springers, Akonides) are now vulnerable to the PAD Epidemic. However, they show different symptoms which manifests themselves as an increase in their aggressive tendencies. Soon, the PAD Epidemic involves the entire Milky Way.

610 - Pilgerflug nach Terra
Pilgrim Flight To Terra
Ernst Vlcek

Some weeks go by and then, suddenly, the first beta-effects of the PAD-Epidemic appear on the earth. All Terrans are beset by the wish to return to the home of their predecessors or to visit the underwater continent of Lemuria. They cannot be talked out of this urge by anyone and don’t even have second thoughts about murder and homicide in order to reach their goal. The government undertakes the most possible in order to put a stop to this development. However all attempts to calm down people through persuasion and the dispensation of Psycho-pharmaceuticals (drugs) remains useless. The size of the migration is too big, and there are too few people that still fight successfully against the symptoms of the PAD. Also Perry Rhodan perceives the pushing wish to return to his ancestral homeland of Bavaria, and Atlan must be allotted Takvorian as a bodyguard since the Arkonide hardly still has his enhanced aggressive tendencies under control. A hundred thousand residents of Earth die in the meantime through accidents and shootings.

However it gets even worse, because suddenly, a pilgrim-fleet of approximately 10,000 spaceships materializes in the proximity of the old Pluto-track, with millions of PAD-infected former settlers on board. These Terran settlers want to land on the Earth. This new threat brings Atlan and Rhodan again to the reason, and the Arkonide starts from the Earth with approximately 1,000 USO-battleships in order to detain the pilgrims. Initially he has success, not least due to the help of Ras Tschubai and Pucky, who, at short notice, teleport again and again onto the pilgrim ships in order to abduct the ringleaders of the invading fleet. As however, a Terran commander threatens to explode his ship if he should not be allowed to land on the earth, and then actually carries out his threat, the situation escalates once again. Only the timely intervention a 9,000 ships of the Terran fleet under the command of Rhodan, finally stops the Pilgrim fleet in its tracts. The fleet does this by producing a gigantic flame-belt of transform bombs around the Earth. The self-preservation-instinct is stronger than the PAD-Epidemic, and most pilgrims flee from the Sol System. Nevertheless, collisions and accidents cannot be avoided, and some dozen ships fall victim and are destroyed.

However, 62 battleships of the Pilgrim fleet under the command of Colonel Olgor Trattin succeed in breaking thru the Terran and USO fleets and landing in Terrania City. From these ships, 280,000 settlers emerge who are half mad and want to level Imperium-Alpha to the ground. As a result, they run blindly into the activated energy shield around the Terran Government HQ - and, thus, into their death. Only as the solar fleet utilizes its narcosis emitters does the onrush of the lunatics finally come to an end. The unconscious are shipped back onto their ships, and on the earth, there is silence for a short time.

The research vessel EX-4007 returns from a two year mission in a space sector far removed from the edge of the Milky Way. On 1 February 3457, its crew learns at the time of a radio contact with the USO heavy cruiser BATRAL about the existence of the PAD. It alters course and heads for the medical planet Tahun. The situation there is out of control. Despite not coming into contact with any other infected living creature from the Milky Way over the past two years, the crew of the EX-4007 is contaminated by the PAD. The Ara physician, Moinsh Krohl, who is the leading scientist studying the PAD on Tahun comes to the conclusion that the disease propagates itself on a five-dimensional basis (i.e. over hypercom communications, etc.). He assumes that it entered and returned on the MARCO POLO when it came back from the parallel universe. Atlan, Pucky, Takvorian and Fellmer Lloyd help specialists of the USO combat agents of the Akonide Energy Command who try to remove the infected crew members of the EX-4007 by transmitter. On February 18 the para-energizing virus of the PAD is isolated. It proves to be unstable and at the time of its isolation and destruction in a special five-dimensional accelerator, it produces a destructive field provoking the explosion of all five dimensional hyperenergetic devices on Tahun.

On 24 February 3457, a fleet of Halutian (Haluter) ships whose crews are infected with the PAD illness land on the Terran colonial world of Foktor-Pural. Due to the effects of the PAD, the Halutians believe that they must reestablish order on the planet Foktor-Pural as well as on many other Terran colonial worlds. The Terrans already settled on these planets have developed strong colonies and, thus, resist the Halutian invasion. However, the invaders sweep aside all resistance and liberation attempts by the Terrans. The conflict soon becomes very violent and deadly.

Because of his stay in the parallel universe, Icho Tolot is in an advanced stage of the PAD illness. The ancient hate of the Halutians towards the Lemurians and their descendents is awakened in him. The same is true for the rest of his race. In the eyes of the Halutians, the descendants of the Lemurians - the Terro-Lemurians - include the Arkonides and Akonides. However, for some reason it does not include the Terrans themselves. On February 28 Icho Tolot attacks the Terro-Lemurian (a.k.a. Arkonide) Atlan while at a meeting in Imperium-Alpha. Atlan flees into the Himalayan mountains where he is ultimately forced to confront Icho Tolot in a final deadly battle. He is saved at the last minute by Takvorian who uses his mutant abilities in order to take control of Tolot. Icho Tolot is brought back to Imperium Alpha where he is imprisoned for his own good and for the safety of Atlan and all other Terro-Lemurians on Earth.

Pushed by an instinctive fear caused by the PAD that reminds them of the atrocities of the ancient Lemurian-Halutian War, the Akonides (Akonen) land on the Terran Colonies that have been occupied by the Halutians. They provoke a bloodbath. For example, the planet Foktor-Pural is devastated by numerous nuclear explosions and its capital city is completely destroyed. On March 6 an Akonide delegation arrives on the Earth in order to ask Perry Rhodan to help them annihilate the Halutians once and for all. The PAD is causing the entire galaxy to sink into chaos.

The protoplasm portion (Biocomplex) of Nathan is contaminated by the PAD illness. As a result, it becomes crazy and develops a will of its own. The subsequent misinformation and erroneous orders given out by Nathan provoke dangerous situations. For example, on 13 March 3457 Nathan issues a false order which results in the destruction of the USO station-241. Geoffrey Abel Waringer penetrates inside the biopositronic computer in order to rectify the problem. In spite of the counter-measures taken by Nathan, Waringer is able to separate the Balpirol semiconductors which connect the protoplasm portion of Nathan to its positronic portion. Once this is accompished, Nathan stops sending out nonsensical orders and causing confusion throughout the Solar Imperium (and the galaxy). Waringer is helped by two technicians.

Meanwhile, the Akonides once again ask Rhodan to help them in their attack against the Halutians (Haluter). They withdraw from the Terran colonies and head toward the Star Cluster M-13, home of the old Arkonide Imperium as well as the New Arkonide world, Turass-Neo.

After a difficult journey, Atlan, Ras Tschubaï and Takvorian arrive on the New Arkonide world Turass-Neo in the Heycron-Nat System. They are there in order to investigate a report that the New Arkonides have discovered a possible cure to the PAD illness. They learn that the extra-brain of the Arkonides, while still developing, emits a hypnotic radiation when subjected to the effects of a machine called a Hyper-Biologicaal Constant Loader. This hypnotic radiation acts against the PAD epidemic and, therefore, it is seen as a possible cure for this devastating illness. However, Thring Malok, the President of the Ruling Council of Turass-Neo, is not willing to cooperate with Atlan. He doesn't hesitate from murdering innocent people in order to deceive Atlan. Eight hundred Halutian vessels approach Turass-Neo. Malok then puts the Hyper-Biological Constant Loader into action. The Halutians are brought to believe that the Lémurians - to include the Arkonides and Akonides - are not their enemies. Instead, they now believe that the Terrans are their enemies and they must be annihilated. In order to save the Earth, Atlan damages the Constant Loader. Torn by his own conflicting emotions, he directs the destructive will of the Halutians back to the New Arkonides, the product of his own long term project to reverse the degeneration of the Arkonides. Afterwards, he flees with Ras Tschubai and Takvorian from Turass-Neo as the Halutians are completing the destruction of the planet.

On 1 March 3457, Julian Tifflor, Alaska Saedelaere, Lord Zwiebus, the eccentric scientist Goshmo-Khan and his servant Plock leave for the planet Maahkora in the Pollaco-Hermi System. Maahkora is the diplomatic world of the Maahks in the Milky Way. The Gazelle of the five Terrans, who fight their symptoms caused by the PAD syndrome with psycho-pharmaceuticals, is forced to land by the Maahks. Since they are infected by the PAD epidemic, the Methane breathers are acting irrationally as evidenced by the fact that they killed the fifty Terran diplomats on Maahkora. They refuse to believe that they themselves are infected and panic due to their fear of the epidemic. In effect, they have their own facet of the illness and want to return to the Andromeda Galaxy. Half of the Maahks depart with one big vessel. Tifflor and his companions escape the attacks of Maahk robots and hide in a second Maahk vessel. Thanks to the irrational behavior of the Maahks they successfully remain hidden. They hope to intercept the first Maahk vessel on the space station (railway station) Lookout, located in intergalactic space, and to prevent the infected Maahks from introducing the epidemic in the Andromeda Galaxy.

This part of the cosmic chess game seems to be favoring the anti-immortal (anti-IT). As all help is forbidden him, the immortal (IT) yet hopes that the Terrans will find the key in time to defeat the PAD epidemic. The immortal ignores the possibility that the anti-immortal has already decided to go beyond the rules in the case that the Terrans are victorious over the PAD illness.
