300 - Alarm im Sektor Morgenrot
Alarm in the Dawn Sector
K.H. Scheer

The year is 2435. Twenty-nine years have gone by since the Terrans defeated the Masters of the Island. A new political and military force has emerged in the Milky Way : the League of Free Traders. Led by the enigmatic Roi Danton, who dresses up and talks like an aristocrat from the seventeenth century, this coalition is mainly focused on making profits. They don't seem to be hostile to Humanity and since they have never been caught doing anything illegal, Rhodan tolerates their activities in the Milky Way.

Mory Rhodan-Abro gave birth to two children in 2405 : Michael and Betty. Michael decided to disappear in order to lead his own life, afraid that the name of his father might be a burden. Betty is married to a hyper-physicist and is in contact with her brother. But she won't give any information about him to Rhodan.

The Blues are struggling in a civil war. The Gatasians are no longer the dominant race of the Eastern part of the Milky Way. Unrest has increased lately, so Rhodan has dispatched fleets of ships in the Dawn Sector in order to monitor the fights. One of these ships, the Kobe, is violently attacked by a Blue fleet. As it is about to be destroyed, the aggressors are destroyed by a foreign ship, which identifies itself as the Francis Drake. This is Roi Danton's flagship. Akanura, the commander of the Kobe, has noticed that the Francis Drake seems to be fitted with transform cannons, which is illegal by Terran laws.

A few hours later, Atlan arrives in the Dawn Sector and meets with Roi Danton for the first time, thanking him for rescuing the Kobe. The two men end up feeling respect for each other. Akanura tells Atlan about the transform cannons but the Arkonid decides to ignore the issue for now.

The reason for Roi Danton's presence in the Dawn Sector has nothing to do with the political situation. It just happens that he is exploiting a nearby planet, called Ruby, which holds a lot of howalgonium, a five-dimensional quartz which is highly valued. The Free Traders are spotted by a Terran exploration ship and within a few hours, a big Terran fleet circles Ruby and asks the Free Traders to leave the planet, now under Terran control.

A mysterious platform materializes near the Dawn Sector. The conversations between the main coordinator and its subordinates lead to think that they're some sort of gift destined to the human race. The platform has been traveling for more than fifty-thousand years and is now looking for evidence that the human race is still alive. When the coordinator detects movement in the Ruby system, it dispatches ten ships there. These ships are almost identical to the Terran galaxy class spaceships.

Rhodan decides to intimidate Roi Danton and drops harmless bombs on the planet. The Free Traders are unimpressed and try by all means to escape with their supply of howalgonium.

The foreign spaceships misinterpret the explosions on Ruby and start attacking the Terrans, wreaking havoc on the few ships gathered in the system. When the platform materializes in the system, sending nine hundred galaxy class spaceships into the fight, the Terrans are dumbfounded : they don't even have that many ships in the whole Galaxy. Yet, these are definitely of Terran construction. The platform itself is a 10km high, 50km big square.

Atlan and Rhodan are stranded on Ruby, so Don Redhorse tries to break through the foreign ships to rescue them. He fails : his ship is destroyed and only fifteen crew members survive. They crash on Ruby in an escape pod.

Roi Danton has managed to escape and as he is leaving the system, we understand that he is Michael, Rhodan's son.

301 - Die Plattform des Schreckens
The Platform of Horror
William Voltz

Another platform has materialized near Ruby. Don Redhorse decides to land on one of the platforms in order to gather more information. When they land, they are greeted by robots who call them "Great Friends". The robots are friendly and ask the Terrans to follow them. Inside, the Terrans realize how similar to Terran technology the base is. They are left in a room. While they wait, they hear human screams but cannot identify where they come from.

After a few hours, more robots come to get them but these are hostile. They open fire on the Terrans with narco-radiants. Only Zachery Parral and a robot escape, the other Terrans are captured. When they wake up, they meet with the owners of the robots that attacked them : they are caterpillar-like creatures who speak a perfect intergalact. They seem to fear that the Terrans are here to chase them from the platform. The Terrans call them "Walkers".

The two platforms leave the system and head for what the Walkers refer to as "The Center". After a short trip, the two platforms dock to a gigantic space station. The Terrans count a total of twelve platforms, each of them carrying about nine-hundred galaxy class cruisers.

The coordinator of the platform is struggling with a dilemma : it cannot determine if it should consider the fifteen Terrans as friends or foes. Urged to make a decision, it decides to have them killed.

The Walkers tell the Terrans that they've been on platforms three and four for centuries. However, they cannot settle on the other platforms, but they won't explain why. Redhorse convinces them to let them go. The Walkers reluctantly comply. As the Terrans are making their way toward an escape shuttle, they are attacked by robots sent by the coordinator. They don't understand why these are now turning against them. They manage to escape and head back to Ruby, where they report to Rhodan.

302 - Gestatten, Gucky und Sohn!
Pucky and Son
Clark Darlton

Rhodan's daughter, Suzan, has been making trips to an unknown destination lately. Intrigued, Mercant asks Pucky to investigate. The mouse-beaver and his son go to Plophos, where Suzan and her mother are spending some time. Despite his efforts, Pucky cannot find anything interesting. He can't even read their thoughts, which puzzles him.

Rhodan contacts him and tells him about Old Man. He wants the mouse-beaver to come back to Earth immediately. Pucky complies but instead of heading for the Earth, he decides to try and hijack a spaceship from Old Man. He sets course for the Dawn sector and teleports with a commando on board of an isolated spaceship, III-696.

The positronic of the spaceship notices their presence and sends armies of robots to kill them. Surprisingly, Pucky and his son are left unharmed by the robots. They reach the command center. As Pucky is trying to find a way to deactivate the automatic pilot, he finds a note on the console. It reads "Welcome, friends" and gives instructions on how to deactivate the computer. There is also the picture of someone, obviously a Terran. Pucky obeys the instructions and all the robots freeze.

They bring back the captured ship on Earth where the scientists confirm that it was built on the same model as the galactic class ultra-cruisers the Empire uses nowadays.

303 - Im Labyrinth des Todes
In the Labyrinth of the Dead
H.G. Ewers

Roi Danton, alias Michael Rhodan, meets in secret with Suzan, his sister. She tells him that her and her husband, the physicist Abel Waringer, have been investigating Old Man and the latest findings about the giant base. The picture found by Pucky on III-696, the captured spaceship, has been identified : his name is Rog Fanther and he was on board the Dino III, a cargo spaceship that entered Vario, the time transmitter, during the fight against the Masters of the Island. Their goal was to rescue Rhodan in the past.

They ended up stranded 50,000 years in the past and the commandant ordered a subliminic round trip flight of 250 light years in order to catch up the 500 year difference with Rhodan's actual position in time. Since then, nobody ever heard from the Dino III again. They must have received the support of some unknown people who helped them build Old Man. Then they sent the giant platform towards Earth in order to help them in the future. Something went wrong and Old Man started attacking the Terrans instead of helping them.

Danton informs Rhodan of his findings, and the Administrator invites him on board the Francis Drake. A commando is put together and heads for Old Man on board the III-696. The Terrans are using frequency annihilators, devices that they used during the posbi war and which hide their organic radiations. Old Man does not seem to suspect anything and lets the spaceship in.

Old Man activates its linear engines and emerges in the Vega sector, where it starts attacking Terran units. Rhodan suspects that the platform is puzzled by the recent events and is trying to investigate from the point where it left (Pigell, the station that holds the time transmitter, used to be on Vega VI).

On Old Man, since they are 150km away from their goal, Pucky decides to try to teleport in the central command with Kaiman, an Oxtornian. This turns out to be a trap : they end up in a maze filled with deadly traps and Pucky is almost killed. The maze seems to be existing on another plane of reality. They manage to escape and come back with the commando.

Their first attempt at conquering Old Man has failed.

304 - Überfall auf Old Man
Raid over Old Man
H.G. Ewers

The commando trapped inside Old Man keeps progressing. Some of the obstacles are removed in strange circumstances, and Roi Danton begins to suspect that Omar Kaiman is responsible for it. The Free Trader remembers that Kaiman once mentioned Hawk, a former officer of the Solar Fleet. During the conflict against the Masters of the Island, Hawk had been allowed by Rhodan to leave the Terran ranks and follow Saar Lun, a Modul. Together, they were taken on board the Ship of Eternity, piloted by a Guardian of the Light. Their goal was to restore the peace between Maahks and Tefrodians.

Pucky executes a short teleportation and rematerializes in the middle of a large clearing. Looking around, he recognizes the familiar landscape of Serengeti, in Tasmania. First thinking it is yet another psychic trap, he realizes that the dangers are real, and to top it all, his paranormal skills no longer work. Pucky barely escapes being trampled on and suddenly, he finds himself back on board Old Man.

They eventually reach the heart of the positronic computer and Pucky attempts to teleport inside. He fails and Old Man suddenly realizes the presence of intruders. The main computer is suddenly protected by a high-energy field. The Terrans are now chased by Old Man's robots, who also kill Walkers, whereas they used to leave them alone. The Walkers are indeed behaving strangely and as Rhodan tries to examine one of them, Ivan Goratchine suddenly pushes him away and urges everyone to back off immediately.

Asked to explain himself, Goratchine says he thinks the base is infected with hypno-crystals. Rhodan and Atlan remember only too well the Magellanic crystals. In March 2388, an unknown spaceship in the shape of a drop had tried to approach Quinto Center. It had been destroyed but later, a meteorite crashed near the Center. The meteorite turned out to be a Great Crystal which was directing the hypno-cristals, a microscopic dust, towards the Center. The Great Crystal was eventually destroyed by an atomic blast, but the base had been infected already, making most of the crew insane.

The Terrans manage to steal a cruiser and leave Old Man.

305 - Die Stunde der Hypnokristalle
The Hour of the Hypno-Crystals
Kurt Mahr

Roi Danton confesses to Rhodan that before they left Old Man, he had set atomic bombs on the giant base to explode after sixty minutes. Since the bombs didn't go off, Rhodan begins to suspect that another intelligence is on board Old Man, which could explain why it was targeted by the hypno-crystals, always trying to expand their control on intelligent creatures.

In the Dawn sector, a drop-shaped spaceship is spotted and soon destroyed by the Solar forces. Out of the cloud of the blast, a four-hundred meter crystal appears and heads for the center of the Galaxy. The crystal seems to come from the Magellanic Clouds.

The Terrans receive a radio message coming from Old Man. Once reconstituted, the message is identified as coming from Rog Fanther, who was the commandant of the Good Hope. Sent in the past to rescue Rhodan and his crew, the Good Hope missed the rendezvous by five hundred years. The crew decided to set on a relativistic trip and was supposed to be back exactly five hundred years later. It was never to be seen again. Rhodan is puzzled and wonders how Fanther could ever be on Old Man. Shortly thereafter, Old Man disappears and dives into linear space, thus respecting the content of the message in which Fanther said he would move away from the Earth.

Old Man appears near a Terran base, New Luna, commanded by Linus Caldwell. Caldwell calls for help as almost all of his fleet has just been destroyed and everyone around him is acting insanely. A commando is sent on the planet, protected by an experimental antidote to the hypno-crystals called the heterocen-B. As they try to rescue Caldwell, the commandant turns out to be under the control of the Crystals even though he was acting normally. His goal is clear : to transport crystals on board the Khrest through the transmitter.

The Terrans manage to kill Caldwell at the last minute and make it back into the Khrest as the effects of the heterocen-B are wearing off.

306 - Keine Rettung für Schlachtschiff OMASO
No Rescue for the Battleship Omaso
Conrad Shepherd

The Battleship Omaso has been following the green crystal in space for more than three weeks when it receives the order from Perry Rhodan to destroy it. The commander of the Omaso decides to investigate the crystal before complying to the order. A shuttle is sent on its surface and its crew quickly succumbs to the psychic attacks.

The shuttle returns to the Omaso, carrying a large quantity of hypno-crystals and soon, the entire battleship is under control of the crystalline agent. The twenty shuttles are taken out of the battleship and destroyed. The crystal then splits itself in twenty fragments, each one occupying a shuttle bay.

Three men have resisted the psychic influence of the crystal and they leave the ship in an escape pod. The pod is taken under fire but eventually escapes. The three men send an SOS as their spaceship start drifting in space.

Roi Danton meets with Atlan in the Dawn sector. The leader of the Free Traders is informed of the current situation of the Omaso and offers his help. Atlan tells him that they haven't heard back from the Omaso since it received the order to destroy the green crystal. The two men head for the last known position of the Omaso on board the Francis Drake.

When they arrive there, they receive the SOS sent by the three men and rescue them, but the Omaso is nowhere to be found. Danton offers to help with a new device designed by his scientists which allows to trace a spaceship in the linear space. In exchange, he asks the ownership of Ruby, the planet where the Free Traders have been mining howalgonium over the past years and which was recently discovered by the Terrans.

Atlan accepts, wondering where Danton got all these scientific discoveries from. He doesn't know yet that it's none else than Abel Waringer, Danton's brother in law, who is supplying the Free Traders with all these inventions.

The Omaso is soon located. Rather than destroying the battleship and thus killing more that one thousand people, they decide to use a trick. The Francis Drake pretends to have been heavily damaged and a small crew of so-called survivors board the Omaso. Then a powerful sleeping gas is spread throughout the spaceship, disabling everybody on board.

The crew is safely rescued and then the Omaso is destroyed. The latest thoughts coming from the crystals show a boundless rage and hate against the Terrans as the crystals realize that their plan has failed.

308 - Grüner Mond über Jelly-City
Green Moon over Jelly-City
William Voltz

Old Man, surrounded by its impenetrable green SH field, is still orbiting Jelly-City. On the planet, everyone is under the influence of the hypno-crystals, except two men, Keegan and Menchos. They have reached the conclusion that their immunity comes from working closely with howalgonium. They want to communicate this information to Perry Rhodan but are afraid that they might be caught if they try.

Roi Danton offers to Perry Rhodan a new device, called a linear tracer, which allows them to track spaceships in linear space. In exchange, Rhodan grants the Free Traders the planet Ruby, and also agrees to recognize the LFT as an official entity.

Four spaceships sent by Old Man land on Jelly-City. They are loaded with green crystals and take off. Keegan and Menchos get on board and realize that the four spaceships are headed toward the Magellan Clouds. They manage to reach the hypercom and send a message to Rhodan summarizing their findings. Unfortunately, they are discovered shortly thereafter and killed by the crew.

The Khrest IV follows the four spaceships into the Magellan Cloud to a planet they call Menchos. Using a protective net-helm supplied by Roi Danton that shields them from the hypno-crystals, Rhodan and eight men land on the planet and start exploring it. There, they find the same drop-shaped spaceships which they had already confronted in the past months.

The spaceport is maintained by Terrans under the influence of the hypno-crystals. Most of them are members of the previous exploration missions sent to Magellan and which never returned. The men board one of the alien spaceships, which takes off shortly thereafter, probably headed for the main planet where the hypno-crystals are stored.

In this room, a brain is connected to the rest of Old Man. Pucky thinks it is the brain of Rog Fanther, the former commandant of Old Man. The crew had managed to keep itself alive through their brains. However, something went wrong and the power changed hands. First, to the positronic brain of Old Man, and then to the hypno-crystals.

Pucky is contacted mentally by the hypno-crystals.They make it clear to him that they want to enslave the Terrans, who turn out to be perfect hosts to them. They offer Pucky to join them. The mouse-beaver refuses and explains that the Terrans will never willingfully give up their freedom.

Roi Danton and two mutants have been forced to paralyze Rhodan and another non-mutant in order to protect then from the hypno-crystals. The protective net-helms work well but somehow, their vibrations can be easily detected. During one of his explorations of the spaceship, Danton is attacked by aliens he calls "Generals", because they carry a strange device on both their shoulder. The object contains some kind of liquid and later, Danton finds out that the alien lives in symbiosis with it.

The drop spaceships, followed by the Khrest IV and the Francis Drake, arrive in the vicinity of a planet which they call Danger I. The albedo of Danger I yields very different values, and the Terrans soon understand why : countless crystals orbit it, causing the changing reflection.

The Terrans destroy the main crystal on board and take control of the alien spaceship, which moves with hyperspace transitions, an antiquated method of traveling. They are soon rescued by Atlan. An analysis of Danger I reveals that new crystals keep taking off from the surface of the planet and settle in orbit. There, they are turned into clouds by the drop spaceships and then aspired by them, before heading back to Menchos.

In the Keegan system, the Terran fleet witnesses a surprising scene : eighty drop ships are attacking the second planet. The commander of the Terran forces concludes that there are two different people piloting those ships, and that they are obviously at war.

Six hundred light years away, the Khrest IV and the Francis Drake follow the four spaceships from Old Man to a system made of two planets. The second one, baptized Modula II, is covered by a thick forest and it is clearly the goal of the four spaceships. Rhodan discovers that the crystals collected from Danger I are harmless. They need to be exposed to a certain radiation on Modula II before they gain their hypnotic power.

A commando led by Felmer Lloyd lands on the planet. The mutant is able to read thoughts from aliens they had never met before. They call themselves Perlians, or also "Tri-Conditioned", and Lloyd learns that they play the role of some kind of police. They are flooding the Milky Way with hypno-crystals as a punishment, but Lloyd is unable to understand the reason for their actions.

The Perlians have a physical particularity : a third eye in the middle of their forehead that sees one tenth of a second in the future. The Terrans are captured by the Perlians and taken to an aquatic city.

In the aquatic City, the Terrans are shown movies by the Perlians, confirming that they consider themselves as some sort of police and that they have come to the Milky Way to punish its inhabitants for some unspecified crime. Then the Terrans are locked up. They manage to escape and go back to the surface. There, they observe the process under which the crystals gain gain hypnotic power through exposition to a radiation.

In the jungle, the Terrans discover a camp of prisoners. They are called Gurrads and are the builders of the drop ships. They used to dominate the Magellanic Clouds until the Perlians arrived and started chasing them, assisted by the Generals and by the hypno-crystals. The Terrans contact the Gurrads who eventually understand that they have found potential allies.

Still in orbit, the Terran forces observe the arrival of a fleet of five hundred drop ships that attack the surface of Modula II. The Terran commando uses the ensuing confusion to send their report to Rhodan, who now understands that Modula II is being attacked by the Gurrad rebels. A Terran fleet is sent to Navo-North, a red giant located at 137,000 light years from the Magellanic Clouds. Navo-North is twenty light years away from the Keegan system, where Rhodan has decided to launch an offensive against Danger I.

A commando made principally of robots is dropped on the planet. It is commanded by three Terrans, all immune to the radiations emitted by the hypno-crystals. Their progression through the planet is being observed by a Perlian and a General, who don't seem to be intimidated at all by the deployment of forces.

Aboard the ships, the radiations are beginning to affect the whole crew and a catastrophe is barely avoided when the pilots realize that the whole fleet is being attracted by the planet. If they had entered a closer range, the whole crew would have fallen under the influence of the crystals. The fleet retires to a safer distance.

On Danger I, the commando progresses through several hypnotic traps and finally enters the command center. The issues are sealed shut and the three Terrans realize that they are trapped. They decide to explore their prison and find numerous skeletons, proof that the Perlians have been exploiting Terrans and other races to mine the crystals. Threatened by electrical shocks, the Terrans realize that they will soon have to comply to the orders from the Perlians.

A robot notices a glitch in its visual sensors and discovers a passageway leading through a fake wall. The commando follows the path and reaches the main control of the base. They destroy it and suddenly, the crystal radiations are unleashed upon the base, killing instantaneously all the Perlians and Generals living there.

The whole operation has been observed by Gurrad spaceships, who disappear shortly after the base has fallen within Terran hands. At the same moment, Old Man leaves the system of Jellico for an unknown destination.

Inside, they find themselves in an isolated bubble where time is going ten times faster. They are soon attacked by Gurrads.

On the Khrest IV, a mathematician tells Rhodan and Atlan about their latest discovery: the reason why the Time Police is after the Terrans is not the time jump they made through Vario, but rather the 500 year ahead time jump that Rhodan made subsequently when he was trying to get back into the present. Shortly after, Rhodan finally realizes that Roi Danton is nobody else than his son, Michael Rhodan.

The Terrans receive the emergency signal sent by Icho Tolot before the Halutians entered the paratronic bubble. The Terran fleet heads for Pfranat where they soon discover the increasingly instable bubble, which finally bursts open. The Halutians emerge and report the information they gathered: four hundred years ago, the Gurrads were making their first experiments with time traval, which caused the Second Frequential Power to step in and to destroy their civilization.

Old Man is still in Navo-North, under the control of Tro-Khon, soon joined by three Dolans. Pucky decides to teleport on the surface of one of them before he lands on Old Man.

Once on the Dolan, Pucky contacts its pilot, called Aser Kin, who lets him in in. Pucky tries to explain the situation but one more time, the Guardian isn't convinced and sends out forces to capture Pucky. The mouse-beaver manages to escape by teleporting himself, but he knows he can't do that forever, and the Paratron shield prevents him from leaving the spaceship.

Then Pucky materializes in the room where the bodies of the seven operators are kept. He quickly understands the importance of this room for the Dolan and after threatening him to destroy the bodies, Aser Kin is forced to open up the Paratron shield. Pucky leaves the spaceship and is picked up by a Terran cruiser.

Rhodan decides to attack Old Man, now completely under the control of the five Dolans. In the middle of the fight, Atlan, Danton, Kasom and Masut teleport on the Khrest IV but they never reach their destination. The Terran firepower is unable to break through the paratronic field that is now erected around Old Man. Tolot deploys his own paratronic shield and, together with the Khrest IV, they open fire on Old Man. Suddenly, a breach opens and both spaceships disappear.

The two spaceships materialize in a galaxy soon identified as M-87, thirty million light years from their initial position. The shock of the two paratron shield caused them to be sucked into hyperspace where a galactic beacon, a cosmic stream emitted by the center of M-87, attracted them to their current location.

Four unusual hyper-radiations are detected on board the Khrest, soon identified as the four missing men. They manage to reintegrate their bodies and materialize aboard the Khrest IV.

Then Icho Tolot and Fancan Teik come back on board the Khrest, the Stone of Detection lights up on the Skovarto's chest, who realizes that Beasts are on board. Asked why the whole M-87 galaxy seems to hate the Halutians so much, the Skovarto explains the past of his race.

Eighty-thousand years ago, the people of M-87 created a new race of androids in an attempt to fight their ennemies. These androids eventually got an intelligence of their own and turned against their creators. They were called Beasts. The Skovars fought hard to defend their galaxy and were almost entirely destroyed during the fight. They managed to find the home planet of the Beasts and exterminated almost of them. The rest fled M-87.

The scientists of M-87 devised a Paratron-based trap that permeated the whole galaxy with a blue radiation that neutralized transdim drives, hence guaranteeing that the Beasts could no longer enter M-87.

Since Rhodan refuses to kill his Halutian friends, the Skovarto demands that his people be brought back to Truuktan. When the Krest arrives on the planet, it is forced to land. His body is ejected from the spaceships and the two spaceships quickly flee in hyperspace in order to escape the blue spheres that keep attacking them. The spheres soon gather around the Bi-Conditioned's dead body and a powerful para-energetic explosion ensues.

The Terrans are then contacted by Halutian-like creatures who call themselves Mooghs. The Mooghs, who are descendants from the Beasts, tell the Terrans that they thought they had found Perry Rhodan. They explain to the stunned Terrans that Rhodan recently sent an ultimatum to the Power of the Center. The Mooghs have been fighting the Power and the Super Engineers for decades but they have had to remain in clandestinity until then. The Mooghs are now eager to make an alliance with the Terrans and they take them to Sel-24, the second planet of the sun Molak and one of their main worlds.

The Terrans are soon challenged to fight in an arena in order to prove their might. The Paladin easily prevails and the Terrans retreat in the Halutian ship, wondering if the Mooghs would be worthy allies, considering their barbaric traditions.

The Crest IV has detected the wavefront caused by the Terran rescue mission when it materialized in M-87. They notice a strong gathering of Dumfries spaceships and when they get there, they observe a fight between the servants of the Power of the Centers and the Mooghs. Then they make contact with the Mooghs, who tell them about the Terran rescue mission. The Crest IV is taken to Sel-24 where Rhodan finally makes contact with the rescue team.

As the Terrans get together to discuss the past events and make plans, the Mooghs they have on board notice the interval gun that once belonged to Tro Khon. They suddenly panic, calling the Terrans traitors and attacking them. The Paladin manages to kill them. When Rhodan tells Agen Thrumb about this incident, the Super Engineer smiles and tells him that the interval gun is emitting powerful signals that is most likely leading the Dumfries fleet to the Molak system. Rhodan realizes that the whole system is doomed and Agen Thrumb's thanks do not alleviate his guilt.

On its way, the corvette is intercepted by chlorine-breathing creatures that inspect the spaceship but eventually leave without any further action. The Terran delegation reaches Parjar and they meet with Kibosh Baiwoff, accompanied by two Super Engineers. The Druisant tells them that the Terrans are invited to join the commonwealth led by the Power of the Center. In exchange, the Terrans demand two paratron converters in order to return to the Milky Way. This demand infuriates the Druisant, who rejects it.

In the meantime, Don Masters, one of the Terran crewmembers, sneaks on board the Druisant's spaceship and discovers that the interception of the corvette by the chlorine creature was staged by the Druisant. He is captured the Dumfries and returned to the delegation, to the Terrans' utter surprise, who would expect the Druisant to try and cover up his secret by killing Masters.

The negociations end by the Druisant eventually accepting to deliver two Paratron converters to the Terrans in four weeks. Still very defying about the Druisant, Masters kidnaps Baiwoff, who is forced to stay with the Terrans as they head back to the Crest IV.

As they are about to report to Rhodan, Masters discovers that a deadly virus has been introduced on the corvette and the spaceship flies away. The chlorine-creatures incident was only meant to mislead the Terrans. The virus soon strikes and decimates almost the entirety of the crew in a few days. A few people suggest to try to come back into the Milky Way with the gear brought by the Box-13111 but Rhodan is determined to unravel the secret of the Creators of the Center and he also wants to grab a transdimensional drive.

The Terran fleet arrives in the Scintilla system and a gnome materializes on the Khrest. His name is Scanlon Ocachee and he introduces himself as a Tri-Thinker. The Terrans also realize that he belongs to the same race as the gnome they found in a sarcophagus a few months ago.

As Rhodan is trying to explain their situation, the Okefenokees tell him they have located a signal emitted from the Khrest and they capture all the Terrans for treason. Shortly thereafter, a fleet of Bestians attack Scintilla and when the Terrans assist the gnomes in fighting back, the Okefenokees realize the Terrans are their friends.

The computer tells the Terrans that the masters of the Magellanic Clouds are the Okefenokees who mutated the Bestians and then fleed from M-87. Rhodan decides to head for Baykalob in order to find out why the Baramos eggs are so important to the First Frequency Power.

Baykalob is surrounded by an impassable paratronic shield and the only way the Terrans can reach the planet is by infiltrating a Baramo spaceship. Many of them are landing on the planet, containing Baramos ready to lay down their eggs.

The Terrans capture a spaceship and after exposing its crew to mental conditioning, manage to land on Baykalob where they are suddenly surrounded by robots, making their exit impossible.

The Terrans hide in the mountains and pick up a few eggs so that the hyperphysicists Beriot and Bisyphere can examine them. On a scouting mission, Pucky teleports inside a room with puzzling drawings that seem to be talking to him.

Beriot and Bisyphere determine that the eggs contain neo-howalgonium which, after being treated, turns into a hormone they call neo-bilatiuum. Inside a factory, the Terrans witness how the neo-bilatium is taken from the eggs and put into metal tubes.

The Terran commando then returns to the Khrest V, which leaves the Baramos system.

The Ship of the Green Ghosts

On its way to Sempervirente, a secret Terran base, examination of the neo-bilatium creates a hyperray emission that turns the entire crew into immaterial ghosts. Unable to interact with physical matter any more, the Terrans can no longer steer the ship.

However, Pucky is unaffected because he fell asleep in his spacesuit, and he manages to manipulate the commands to put the spaceship in orbit around the second planet of a sun called Neo. Then the spaceship lands on the second planet and hides at the bottom of the ocean.

The analysis of the neo-bilatium reveals that the substance has the power to mutate the pseudo-Gurrads.

The Ex-8703, commande by Vivier Bontainer, arrives in Sempervirente, in the Smaller Magellanic Clouds, when he receives the emergency call from the Krest V. He heads there and after evading the two Dolans guarding the system, rescues the Krest and its crew.

Researches are then started to restore all the Green Ghosts back to their human form.

Armond Bysiphere finally comes up with a solution and the exposure to the paraneutral radiant returns the crew to their normal form. Then the container of neo-bilatium is shipped to Earth for further study.

The wreck of a Baramo spaceship is discovered in the matter bridge between the Magellanic Clouds. Inside, the dead bodies of both Gurrads and Baramos are recovered, apparently killed by a Bi-Conditioned attack five hundred years ago.

They also discover a Bestian but without his symbiotic partner. They decide to bring the body back to the Earth but the Bestian wakes up and takes control of the spaceship. When they arrive on the Earth, he almost manages to clear the immigration by taking the shape of a pork but he's uncovered at the last minute and then destroyed.

Further researches on the Baramo spaceship turns out a memory crystal that is soon deciphered by the Halutians, revealing the history of their race.

The Halutians are the result of genetic manipulations conducted 70,000 years ago by the rulers of M-87 in order to create superior warriors. The warriors rebelled and fled, some of them finding shelter in the Greater Magellanic Clouds, where they created a new type of Bestians capable of possessing other bodies.

Still traumatized against the Okefenokees, they developed a sheer hatred against any civilization capable of traveling through time and they started fighting the Lemurians as soon as they detected their time experiments. The expedition destroyed the Lemurian civilization and then settled on Haluta, while the Bestians remained in Magellan created a third type: the Bi-Conditioned.

When Icho Tolot seens the dead Beast, he identifies him as an Uleb, a memeber of the First Frequential Power. The Halutian took with him a virus created by the Ulebs to get rid of rebels.

The spaceship is set up so that the death seems to have occurred because of the virus. Then the Baramo spaceship is sent toward its original destination, where it is captured by a tractor beam and brought to the surface. When Ulebs discover the dead body, they panick and the Terrans use the diversion to go into hiding.

The Terrans call for help and a powerful fleet arrives near the planet, called Gurrad Port, and attacks it. An Uleb spaceship takes off and heads for an unknown destination, followed by a Terran shuttle.

The End of the Dolans
Hans Kneifel

In the Solar System, a fleet of nine thousand Dolans is detected and reports show that they are now immune to the DpF devices. The Terran forces suffer massive losses and when he is informed of the situation, Rhodan asks Bontainer to go ask the Halutians for help.

When they arrive on Haluta, they are attacked by the Halutians and after making a contact with a Terran professor on the surface, they understand why: a failed experiment led to the activation of a transmitter that materialized three Ulebs on the planet. They emit a radiation that is making the Halutians revert to their primitive state of Ulebs.

Bontainer sends a commando on the planet and they manage to kill the three Ulebs. Bontainer then asks Waxo Khana for help and fifteen Halutians spaceships are dispatched to the Solar System.

On the Earth, the situation is disastrous. Old Man has been completely destroyed and the Dolans are methodically destroying everything on the surface of the planet. The Halutian fleet eventually defeats the Dolans but the Solar Empire is now in shambles.

Alarm for the Galaxy
H.G. Ewers

The light cruiser Panto Pea discovers an old statoin on an asteroid that seems to have been created by It but was completely destroyed by the Beasts. Shortly thereafter, a big hyperspace shock is detected coming from the center of the galaxy and the Terrans realize that the Creators of the Centers have just arrived in the Milky Way with a huge fleet commanded by Kibosh Baiwoff.

The Terrans determine that the Okefenokees are headed toward Enemy to destroy the Beasts there and afterwards, they will probably attack the Halutians as well. Rhodan heads for Enemy where he tries to convince the Okefenokees but his advice falls on deaf ears and soon turn Enemy into a nova.

A commando is sent on Uleb 1 in a last-ditch attempt to salvage any information they can and Roi Danton gets killed in one of the fights against the Beasts. Enemy turns into a nova and destroys Atlas and the entire Uleb civilization. Rhodan demonstrates the hyperinmestron, which they used against the Masters of the Islands to destroy the star transmitter, and the Okfenokees, impressed, withdraw.

The Solar Empire has won but it's been almost entirely destroyed and it is expected that it will take decades to recover from the conflict.
